Poor access to health care, slow conventional diagnostic methods, underfunding of clinics and lack of trained staff prevent or delay TB diagnosis among underserved populations. HeroRATs help find missed cases, particularly with children or infections with low bacterial load.
HeroRATs are valued teammates. They are given the same care and respect shown all APOPO staff. We will share more videos showing how these incredible heroes live and play.

We understand the concern. The work station in the lab is not where the HeroRAT lives. They work about 20 mins a day, weekdays, and spend the rest of their time in spacious kennels (usually with a sibling per their natural behavior) with daily access to large enrichment pens to run, climb, and dig.
