Changing the label doesn't solve the problem. #EduSky

We have become obsessed and overly reactive about testing than closing the gaps in teaching-and-learning. Perhaps, our understanding of the problem is still limited or superficial. 😊
Our underperformance in PISA is not merely a consequence of differing the way we test our learners compared to the rest of the world, but is largely attributable to our priorities and practices in the classroom and in the Department as a whole.
When an assessment outcome is unfavourable, it is imperative to focus on refining the instruction rather than altering the assessment itself.
I really love this approach by Steve Kaufmann for teaching languages in the classroom. He also speaks to the Canadian education context directly and outlines some solutions to our terrible outcomes in teaching french in our public schools. www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Jqs...
How do Philadelphians pronounce 'Passyunk'? It's complicated.
Really appreciate how their first reference is to the original Lenape version(s)

Important work on large language models and discrimination here. Good timing, given yesterday's UK government announcement about the 'mainlining' of AI (🙄).

A colleague on X has suggested every linguist should brush up on their von Humboldt, de Saussure, Bloomfield, Boas, Sapir, Harris, and Chomsky.
Who else would you add to the list?

I'll be running a professional development workshop for our Linguistics PhDs on non-traditional career paths. What advice should I give them? What resources should I share?
Here's what I shared last time - thanks @hadaskotek.bsky.social!

Hello resident linguist here and PhD in English. This is true. AAVE as a language has rules that negate the way we are taught to speak and it is culturally specific. You cannot learn AAVE if you did not grow up speaking it. You will not understand the linguistic nuances.
Every time I read the local news and see a teacher who was awarded a $250 grant for her classroom, I understand that she spent hours of her own time applying for it. Writing it. Going through a submission process.
For $250. For her classroom…

I've been tinkering on this project with Jess Kruk. Hoping we'll be able to keep adding existing work as well as new things coming out. #lingcomm
As Kate Price, a Brit living in Berlin, explains about speaking German:
“There is definitely a parabola – one drink, getting more confident; two drinks, feeling eloquent; but three drinks, probably starting to slide down the other side of the curve”. 😊🍷🍷

Captions confer comprehension advantages up through advanced levels of L2 proficiency - only at highly-advanced levels (C2 in the Common European Framework) does this advantage seem to dissipate.

I paid a respect to the shaman, elders, and chieftains of Higaonon #tribe, an ethno-linguistic group in the #Philippines, through a ritual and conducted a community-based theater production to show their almost forgotten traditions.

While promoting ind. lang. thru signages is beneficial to the vitality of an ethno-ling group, here is a case from the #linguisticlandscape of Chiapas, Mexico 🇲🇽 that shows otherwise. Coca-Cola weaponized language and hijacked culture. Now, these IPs became loyal to the brand. #langsky #linguistics
