I've managed to find 3 lesser spots excavating 3 holes this spring. And I've found two other new holes nearby. Here's hoping the birds use one or two of these for nests. This male like the others has almost finished. @lesserspotnet.bsky.social #Birds The birds are now very quiet and elusive.

A map of England is shown, along with a down arrow that states that this species declined by 35% 2014-204. The title says: ‘Green Woodpecker.’ The BBS logo also features a drawing of a Goldfinch.

(3/) The possible reasons why Green Woodpeckers are declining in England are currently quite challenging to determine. It may be related to the availability of food, but more research will need to be done to prove this.

(2/) On the other hand, the vibrantly coloured and noisy Green Woodpecker has experienced a noticeable decline across England. It declined by 35% across the country between 2014–2024.

(1/) It’s hammer time! Great Spotted Woodpeckers continue to increase across the UK. This distinctive species is even being seen more regularly in Northern Ireland, where it used to be very scarce. @btobirds.bsky.social @jncc.bsky.social @rspbscience.bsky.social #Ornithology #CitizenScience

Another territory and this male was frantically drumming and calling all over the slope. Hope he has a female but she was conspicuous by her absence this morning @lesserspotnet.bsky.social #Birds

I saw some early signs of excavating at the weekend and come hail or shine this male lesser spot was busy excavating today. My earliest views of excavation. @lesserspotnet.bsky.social #Birds @angusrobin.bsky.social

Excellent, your LSW are starting early, but as we know LSW sometimes excavate several cavities before settling. Some are used for roosting.

Thanks Richard, it is a Great Spot drum, short (<1 sec) & accelerating. For Lessers the drum is longer & the interval between the drum beats is the same throughout, so it sounds 'flat'. But it's not easy as drums are variable, see our drumming guidance www.woodpecker-network.org.uk/images/Drums...

Can @lesserspotnet.bsky.social or others say whether this is definitely a Lesser Spot drumming? Heard only a in a couple of short bursts, and no bird seen. And it's a long time since I've encountered one! Sound file has been amplified. #KentBirding #KentNature

LESSER PECKER. Brilliant views this morning. Turned up & it landed on the tree 5 mins after I arrived. Great views for 10 mins, then it was gone. It’s a massive thrill whenever I see this amazing little woodpecker. #ukbirding #birds @lesserspotnet.bsky.social #birdsseenin2026

AI helps discover rare lesser spotted woodpecker’s call in Sussex Artificial intelligence helped process more than 30,000 hours of recordings to track down the birds.

Passive acoustic monitoring and AI
surveys reveal far more threatened Sussex Lesser spotted Woodpeckers than we thought.
Much bigger @lesserspotnet.bsky.social and @sussexornitholo.bsky.social underway this spring should give a fuller picture. Exciting times!
