Pacific Drive Creative and Art Direction, Cassandra Dracott Responsible for creative and art direction on Pacific Drive. Directly responsible for lighting and atmospherics, many foliage assets and shaders, and taking these official screenshots. Massive credit ...

The work done by every part of the team on Pacific Drive is truly incredible. It was an absolute privilege to lead the team and the project and I figured it was time to put together a post for some of the visual direction.

If there was any goal to be had with this post, it was to 1) encourage ppl to try hardware but with managed expectations, and

2) introduce the term "time risk" when designing synth patches 😆. Sometimes HW *reduces* it when compared to softsynths!

(....usually not, tho)

90% = Moog SubPhatty. Great for bass drones, sub bass

65% = Arturia Minibrute 2S. Great for bass sequences, sequences, some perc loops too

40% = Arturia Microfreak. Bit of a shocker, but when I thought about it, I realized there's patches I've designed here that are indispensable and live rent-free in my imagination; I think of them as part of my palette just the same as I'd think of a trombone or oboe. Specifically, a synth low strings patch and a few blip arps

30% = Korg Minilogue. Artificially low % because this is the FIRST synth I always turn on when I want anything. It might even be my favorite really - but because I use it so much, the % is lower and the "time risk" is high. Still, this places it evenly with software synths in time risk and versatility. Amazing for arps and pads; not so great for bass stuff though, IMO

15% = Korg MS-20mini. Uh oh!! Hopefully not too offensive a score, but basically it's the biggest gamble of all. Aggressive, unruly, and inherently a bit "low fi" sound, but it's got more vibe and life than anything... Just ridiculously hard to predict or control. But when it hits, it WILL be a signature sound. Great for bass, drones, FX, and ultra vibey arps

PRODUCTION TIP: [photo] If I were to guess how often, when I turn on a synth, that I actually USE the result!

Results *greatly* skewed bc some synths get way more attempts than others. But just to give an idea, if you're interested in hardware!

Lol thanks Luke! Slightly embarrassing linking a track that's old enough to hit the pub but I'm glad you enjoyed it 😆

I mentioned this was my first *released* game - I'd written for tiny indies for over 6 years at that point, but back then it was way harder to finish a game (less middleware, storefronts, etc). As the article states, it was a side project in a totally new genre, but so much fun to work on!

Control Monger | The Obscuritory The free, defunct multiplayer shooter Control Monger has a unique defensive gameplay keeps you constantly moving. To learn what it was like, I brought in some friends!

This was all courtesy of The Obscuritory, a site featuring old obscure titles. I remember Control Monger had a small but active community at the time, hence the revival. They even did an interview with the lead developer:

Recently found folders of my earliest #gamemusic, and found "Control Monger", the first game I scored that actually released! Freeware multiplayer FPS from 2005, think Team Fortress with flying robots 😆

There was a revival event 8 years ago, so I made a vid with the footage & my menu theme! (1/3)

Very clarinet-like IMO, with the most prominent partials being the even-numbered ones!

(nice find!)

Looks like some folks are playing a beta build of Star Wars First Assault, a game I worked on as a junior designer, very early in my career. I can't say much, but just seeing folks playing it for the first time warms my heart.

Nah all it does is make a folder with everything after the "/" as the filename. I've done auto-folders before with Region names actually, so I get why this feature is there! Just not ideal in this case

Oh, also FWIW Reaper will still render and auto-name tracks with invalid characters, it just changes them into underscores usually. The \ and / are the most problematic because Reaper gets confused and makes unwanted subfolders:

1 month ago 0 0 2 0

Funny enough, even in my more recent projects I've kept the "SEND:" tracks cuz the naming convention does automatic things within reaper for me, and I never render those tracks out on their own.

So it's not a hard and fast rule, but a good guideline!

Behold the Screenshot Of Shame, where I use the / character in so many tracks

Behold the Screenshot Of Shame, where I use the / character in so many tracks

#REAPER TIP: Do not use characters like /, \, ? or ! in your track names! Anything incompatible with Windows filenames can be a headache later on, if you wanna auto-export stems.

(seems obvious but I'm looking at an old project file and, apparently it wasn't... 🤦‍♂️)
