Wow- what a clever virus!
Can a single viral protein change how you think 🧠🧐? We think so! Our new preprint shows how herpes simplex virus protein pUL56 turns off neuronal electrical activity.

How do proteins find their way to the cell's leading edge? @jimgalbraith27.bsky.social & @cathygalbraith.bsky.social break down how bleach line, FLOP, single-particle tracking, FCS & iPALM reveal intracellular fluid flow and an actin-myosin compartment barrier. doi.org/10.1038/s414...
Breakdown of costs for JCS in 2025. Pie chart: Editorial salaries and stipends - 19%; In-house production salaries - 23%; Manuscript processing and publication costs - 7%; Travel and expenses - 3%; Marketing - 6%; Sales - 8%; Community engagement - 5%; General expenses/overheads - 29%.
Why is publishing so expensive?
In this Editorial, we (@katherine-brown.bsky.social @drmichaelway.bsky.social & @seemagrewal.bsky.social) provide details and context on JCS's finances, and hope to dispel some of the myths around the economics of publishing.

Crick evolutionary biologist @margaridamcm.bsky.social is working with conservation charity ZSL to investigate an enduring mystery: how the placenta has evolved with incredible variation across species.

The cell biology community mourns the loss of Catherine Rabouille, an exceptional scientist whose determination, innovation, and fearless engagement with ideas reshaped how we think about cellular organization. #InMemoriam from @adamgrieve.bsky.social and colleagues: rupress.org/jcb/article/...
The first meeting I ever went to when I finished my PhD was Alpbach......what happened to the snow there was load of it in 1988/89?
The Czech #ERC_CZ program is the best thing the country has done for research. Czech @erc.europa.eu wannabes who did not get the EU grant receive support from the Czech ministry for 2 to 5 years (depending on the ERC grade (A/B)). It supports research that would otherwise never see the light of day.

⚡️We are excited to share a new paper from the lab by @drkhole.bsky.social in @cp-cellrepmethods.bsky.social - suggesting MitoTracker dyes are not a reliable tool for detecting intercellular mitochondrial transfer❗️ www.cell.com/cell-reports...
Alan Wilson speaking at the Biologists @ 100 conference organised by The Company of Biologists in Liverpool in March 2025. Alan is holding a microphone and speaking into it.
We are deeply saddened by the death of Alan Wilson. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, collaborators & colleagues 🧵1/3

It’s such shocking sad news we have lost Alan. He was such fun and inspiring on the CoB board where we met every 3 month for many years. So many great memories of Alan that I will always cherish.
Very sad to hear of the death of Robin Weiss FRS - a great virologist, research leader and mentor in whose lab I learned molecular biology. A wonderfully kind and morally attuned man.

On Jan 28, 2026, Institut Pasteur paid tribute to a visionary scientist and human leader.
His legacy lives on through the PPU–Research & Technology track, uniting research & innovation as he envisioned.
Inspiring future generations.

Tom was atotally inspiring and so passionate when he gave lectures in my first year in King's college Biophysics Dept London many moons ago.
I’m embarrassed to find how little I knew, or thought, about Agarose. Despite its efficacy, ubiquity & essential nature in labs.
Nor did I know anything about Fanny Angelina (another example, whether intentional or not, of the Matilda Effect) & Walther Hesse.
This is absolutely fascinating.
I have multiple positions available to join my lab from this summer: #postdoc, #student and #technician. Adverts to follow but see www.saurinlab.com for further details. #senescence, #mitosis, #cellcycle, #phosphorylation are the key areas. Email me if interested.
Closing date is 19th Feb so why not go for it to enjoy the rain in London!

Only a few spots left for this amazing meeting! Just sign up and join us to discuss all #cellbio #imaging things!
Guess I'll never become an immunologist then!
2nd postdoc job alert in the Crick Institute in London. Project will examine the role of motors & the cytoskeleton (actin, septins and microtubules) during vaccinia virus egress using biochemical, structural & cellular approaches + live cell imaging. spread the word.

Postdoc job alert in the Crick Institute in London. Are you interested in the actin cytoskeleton? I am looking for a postdoc to examine the cellular, developmental or physiological role of Arp2/3 iso-complex driven actin polymerisation. Multiple aspects available.

Two postdoc positions in way lab go live tomorrow......please pass the message along.......more details to follow.
