“Force, hatred, history, all that. That’s not life for men and women, insult and hatred. And everybody knows that it’s the very opposite of that that is really life… Love, says Bloom. I mean the opposite of hatred.”

Excellent thread about the UK Supreme Court judgment on the definition of sex as used in the Equality Act 2010 (which is what the case was about). Very welcome depth and nuance in this analysis

Back at work today, and full of thoughts about the Supreme Court judgment last week. It’s much more nuanced than it might seem at first glance, and it’s hard to cut through the vitriol around it. That’s understandable - it’s obviously very emotive. I’m going to try break down the legal principles.

Pundits’ showy partisanship reflects football’s embrace of fan-centric populism | Jonathan Liew The coverage of Manchester United’s win over Lyon last week was just the latest sign that fandom is consuming everything

on the triumph of tribalism. the club lens has consumed the way we watch and talk and write about football these days. punditry, social media, even journalism. to the point where performative tribalism has become the only acceptable way of "enjoying" football
