Current Vacancies

Our Wild Immunology team is looking for a new research veterinarian.

The project will involve 5-7 day field trapping trips a few times per year and assisting with caring for animals during vaccine trials with captive and wild devils.

Drivers of Viral Diversity and Sharing in Marine Mammals Knowledge of viral infection in marine mammals, a group severely threatened by human activity, is largely limited to the pathology and epidemiology of few endemic viruses. The recent emergence in mar...

🌊 How do viruses circulate in marine mammals?

New research from @matt-arnold-bio.bsky.social & colleagues explores viral communities across 15 species in Scotland, identifying 120+ viruses.

Younger animals carry more, and sharing between species is common.

Wondering what happens if a seal sneezes on a whale? We were! 🦭🤧🐋

We sequenced viromes from 16 species of marine mammals stranded in Scotland. Of >100 viruses detected, ~10% appeared in multiple species (one in both seals & cetaceans!), mirroring known interspecies interactions in Scottish waters.

Virus‐Dependent Geographic Structure of Co‐Circulating Viruses in a Single Bat Species Understanding the spatial spread of viruses within wildlife populations is often a key component of disease management efforts. Viral spread is likely constrained by host ecology, but inter-virus dif...

Excited to share my first paper! Co-circulating viruses in bats show diverse spatial movement patterns, perhaps due to different infection biology. Not all viruses move like their hosts, or like other viruses; Use them for inference with awareness and care!🧪 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Ecological vaccination: A strategy to prevent zoonotic spillover from bats Harnessing natural behaviors to vaccinate wild bats reduces zoonotic spillover risk while supporting conservation.

This is a fascinating study!
Researchers developed an incredible new approach to prevent pandemic spillovers by vaccinating BATS themselves using mosquitoes and salt traps. It comes with some risk and caveats and will need robust regulation for prime time.🧵

New study reveals contrasting spread of bat viruses in Peru Researchers have uncovered clear differences in how viruses spread within the same wildlife host, challenging assumptions about how infection moves through animal populations.

Not all bat viruses spread the same way 🦇

A new study from @averyholmes.bsky.social & colleagues looked at six viruses in vampire bats in Peru & found contrasting patterns of circulation.

Some reflect bat movement, others were influenced by human activity.

Three blue boxes containing white snowflake-like silhouettes of viruses

I wrote a festive little piece for @uk.theconversation.com about the invisible but beautiful world of viruses, our fight against viral diseases, and how you can explore all of this, and more, by making paper snowflakes
