Italian fashion designer Valentino Garavani was born #OnThisDay in 1932. He designed this 1961 haute couture pleated gown, trimmed with ostrich feathers around the hem, that Elizabeth Taylor wore to a party in Rome in honour of Kirk Douglas. Maison Valentino. #FashionHistory

#Frockingfabulous birthday salute to #Valentino, who was born #onthisday: This utter stunner is hand-painted and it’s a bobby dazzler to boot! Mind. Blown. #fashionhistory of 1998, via Valentino Virtual Museum.

Side by side image of a long purple satin gown with a deep collar alongside a picture of the same gown with its matching ruched velvet shoulder caps
It isn’t quite summer and evenings are chill. My advice when sporting a mid #1930s #Lanvin purple satin evening dress is to make sure you have a matching ruched velvet cape to snuggle around the shoulders, V&A #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

Pintuck perfection and blurry florals fashion a foamy tea gown made for trailing wistfully around the house, sinking gracefully onto a cushioned chaise longue and sipping tea from bone china. C1900 @chicagomuseum.bsky.social #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡
A long cotton dress consisting of straight white skirt and a black short sleeved bodice with a pink belt
#Balenciaga brought all of the mini skirt minimalism to a maximalised evening dress here, some mid #1960s broderie anglaise in two tones, bisected with a candy pink belt. I like its apparent simplicity….. #museobalenciaga #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡
Thank you! I love art history and fashion history, but I wanted to study them on a deeper societal level. This was really affirmed during my FH 1 course because class and how that played into who wore what was a big part of the lessons. It was a lot deeper than memorizing what was popular and when.
Cover of Costumes and Textiles of Royal India by Ritu Kumar. There is a photograph of small child in decorated attire and jewels to the right, and a wide border of printed fabric to the left. Color is black and white tones,.
Regret to inform myself that I’ve added yet another out of print book to my wishlist
Photo of a silk robe a la francaise. Dress is flat, but not fully extended. Features spangled embroidery and floral embroidery throughout and ruffled, elbows length sleeves
One of my favorite things about FIT is how you can just open a random box in the lab and there’s an 18th century robe a la francaise chilling for research and practice purposes

1950's supermodel Bettina (born Simone Micheline Bodin) getting ready for an outdoors photoshoot. A male photographer to her left, leaning over a tripod-mounted camera, is giving her directions. Bettina wears a floral-patterned, calf-length white dress with a low V cut between her breasts and shoulder straps, with a close-fitting white hat over her dark hair, several strands of pearls, dark open-toed shoes and elbow-length white kid gloves.

It is always a joy to bring different cultural textiles into the curriculum and this year I talked with students about, amongst other things, Ghanaian kente cloth. Lovely to come across this tribute to kente in Patrick Kelly’s 1988 printed trousers #museumatfit #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

I'm not on here as often as I should be because I'm getting my degree in Art History focusing on class expression and garment history. But this semester is wrapping up quickly and so hopefully I'm able to post more
celebs as guests with the agreement that they wear the designer and act as a brand ambassador for the event. unless the person receives an permanent open invite. Even then donating is highly encouraged. It’s also not a closed event just expensive bc it’s a charity.
a lot of ppl don’t~ they think it’s a party but it’s a charity event bc unlike the met museum the costume institute is funded solely on public donations. And with funding for museums being cut their funding is even more at risk. Also celebs don’t buy their tickets designers buy tickets and invite
A mixed-race Malaysian man wearing the hell out of a fantastic, gold, three-piece suit. Broad-shouldered, wide-legged, and with a cross-hatched pattern that's more complex the closer you look at it. His collar is open to the second button, showing off a bit of gold chain around his neck, and only the barest bit of a black silk shirt is visible at the collar and wrists. His hair is slicked back, with one Clark Kent curl on his forehead. Black shoes, shined within an inch of their life.
Detail at his hands and hips level, so that you can see how incredible the pattern on this suit is. It looks a bit like the indigenous weaving you might find in parts of Southeast Asia, geometric and warm. A gold ring on one finger, circle with a bar. The hint of a gold watch.
okay, i'm not gonna do a whole long thread, but. henry golding showed UP.
