"How can we expect righteousness to prevail when there is hardly anyone willing to give himself up…to a righteous cause? Such a fine, sunny day & I have to go, but what does my death matter, if…thousands of people are awakened & stirred to action?"

“Somebody, after all, had to make a start. What we wrote and said is also believed by many others. They just don’t dare express themselves as we did.” Sophie Scholl, #OTD in 1943, speaking in her defence, during her "trial". #WW2 #HISTORY
People want to believe that most Germans didn't know about it or that lots of them were good people like Sophie Scholl. Too easily do we forget that we remember Sophie Scholl specifically because of how extraordinary she was. She did what many wouldn't.

Black history is American history. The music, the movements, the sacrifice, the triumph - it has all shaped who we are.
In celebrating Black History Month, let us learn the untold stories and honor those who paved the way for progress.
During the Nazi occupation of their country Norwegians made and wore red tasseled hats as a form of visual protest Within two years, the Nazis made these protest hats illegal and punishable by law to. wear, make, or distribute. As purveyors of traditional craft, we felt it appropriate to revisit this design.
I have the hat pattern for the Melt the Ice hat, will be casting on in the next few days, the money I paid will go towards the protests, and I will donate two hats to whoever wants them, Minneapolis and Minnesota residents only.
An oil painting with pelargoniums and a wooden lizard
Another still life, this time featuring pelargoniums, a wooden lizard and a wooden bird with a long beak, poppy seedheads and autumn colours in the leaves outside the studio window. That old earthenware pot with twisty handles is a favourite. Oil on gessoed board, 2019.

ICE’s tactics have been terrifying and tragic, but Minneapolis is responding in incredible ways. Residents are organizing, feeding and housing their neighbors, and putting real social infrastructure in place. What’s taking shape isn’t just a reaction, it’s a blueprint for resistance.
I wrote this yesterday about the hero city of Minneapolis

The federal presence in Minnesota has been especially tough on our local businesses.
Choosing to shop local, grab takeout, or visit a neighborhood store is one way we can stand with our neighbors and continue to show the nation what it means to respond with care and decency.

Just a couple of beach sketches from long ago when we regularly visited Charmouth in Dorset in our little red VW Beetle with our small son. I'll find some more. Happy memories brought back as only a sketch on the spot can do!

Bovino was forced out of Minnesota because the American people stood firm. Tens of thousands of people took to the streets in below-freezing temps to peacefully defend their neighbors & freedoms.
We’ll keep fighting. No more deaths at the hands of rogue DHS agents.

On Holocaust Remembrance Day, we remember the six million Jewish people murdered by the Nazis, as well as countless other victims.
We honor their lives by rejecting the evils of antisemitism, dehumanization, and authoritarian violence wherever they appear.
Never again means never again for anyone.
The killing of Alex Pretti is a heartbreaking tragedy. It should also be a wake-up call to every American, regardless of party, that many of our core values as a nation are increasingly under assault.
