I collected this #Bombus terricola in 2015 on the Îles de la Madeleine, an
Archipelago in #Québec - I knew of no previous records. Today I found an 1890 publication of Léon Provancher and it was one of two bee species listed. We now know there are at least 5 other #bumblebee species there too.

I just identified Ashmeadiella aridula aridula Cockerell, 1910 for the first time from Canada - Grasslands National Park in Saskatchewan to be specific. This species has only been recorded in the western United States. #beesofcanada #beesofsaskatchewan #bees
Some #Bombus suckleyi collected from 1969-2002. It is a #cuckoo of the western B. occidentalis which makes its presence on #Newfoundland so unusual, but it likely also attacks nests of B. terricola. It is seemingly very #rare in Canada, especially in the east #bumblebees #beesofcanada

Did you know that there are over 1030 #species of #bee recorded from #Canada? We keep a tally and catalogue here: www.beesofcanada.com
I really am looking forward to seeing #flowers again in #Saskatchewan, these from four years ago near Walwort
You know how in a library no one’s trying to sell you anything?
That’s how the internet was.
I was happy to help out?

You can find cool things in blue vane traps! Nine years ago we found this beautiful #chalcid #wasp Hockeria eriensis, which was a new record for #Canada (as per Halstead 1990). It is a #parasite of larval ant lions, which were somewhat abundant at this sandy #badlands habitat in #Saskatchewan.
It is not often that I see Protandrena from #britishcolumbiacanada and this one appears to be an #undescribed #species (though I believe there is a name forthcoming) #beesofcanada #beesofbritishcolumbia
Five “similar” looking #bumblebee species from one collecting event from coastal #britishcolumbia.
While identifying #bumblebees I came across an interesting male of #Bombus rufocinctus. The second image shows the normal head/face of a male, while the head in the second is quite deformed; the right eye/antennae are absent but the exoskeleton is present and is covered with hair. #beesofcanada

These wonderful #paintings of #bees were done by Hashime Murayama (1879–1954), a Japanese American painter and scientific illustrator and appeared in the July 1937 issue of The National Geographic Magazine. As much as I love #macrophotography, paintings such as these are such a pleasure to look at.
I have been interested in the faunistics of northern #Canada and #Alaska for some time. This lovely volume on the #arthropods of #Greenland is an excellent contribution; the three bee species are covered on three pages, though what was called #Bombus hyperboreus should now be Bombus natvigi.
I drew this for my aunt when I was a teenager before I had any knowledge of archival acid-free paper. It was framed without glass, and received the full range of exposure of dust and smoke from the house it was in. #pencil #art #dogs #sketch

I must admit, I have not seen many specimens of #Bombus variabilis, this #cuckoo #bumblebee was collected in Florida in 1984. @paulwilliamsnhm.bsky.social
