First summer ♂ Woodchat Shrike at Boscregan found on 9th April, still present today 20th April. This is the first for the year in Cornwall.
The coastal far west of Penwith is the best area for this species. Up to 2023, there are 175 records in Cornwall, many from this area.
Sand Martin in the rain at Gwithian today (14th April). At least 120 over the pool, highest number I’ve seen this Spring.

Nice photos Gareth.

Fond memories.
RIP my old friend Royston Wilkins who sadly passed away this morning 8th April. A big character on the Cornish and Scilly birding scene. Birding to the very end, he managed to tick the Killdeer just last Friday. The picture shows both of us when we re found the Booted Eagle. RiP my friend.
Pendeen Watch (5th April)
Strong westerly - four hours from 7:15am.
144,000 Manx Shearwater
1 Red-throated Diver the highlights.
Edit. The Chapel Amble bird is officially the 3rd for Cornwall. The 1957 and 1959 birds appear in the county Reports but were never actually submitted to BBRC.
Killdeer at Chapel Amble, Cornwall. (4th April ‘26). A county tick for me.
It’s the 5th county record. The first was way back in 1957 and the last was 2002, when a one-day bird was found at Gwithian.
An incredible find by Shaun Grose as he also found the recent Ross’s Gull👍

Dusky Warbler at Boscathnoe, Cornwall, 28th March ‘26
Close up picture showing the pale lower mandible, pale orange legs and long sweeping supercilium. This wintering bird has offered 4 mths of great opportunities to get to grips with its finer id features.

Dusky Warbler at Boscathnoe 28th March 2026.
The wintering Dusky Warbler showed well this morning at its faithful spot. Present from 17th December and never really ventured further than the reservoir perimeter. Today it gave incredible views. It has also been heard singing.

With a scope.
A first winter Bonaparte’s Gull was found at Marazion beach, in front of the Godolphin hotel on Sun 15th March. It was still present 16th and I saw it well with several Black-headed Gulls. Whether it is a wandering bird or a new one is difficult to say. There’s a few around!

Nice pictures Jon. There’s been a few more Red-necked Grebes around this winter. On the flip side, Slavonian is really scarce.
Manx Shearwater is back in Cornish waters in numbers. 317 this morning off Porthgwarra and 515 yesterday off Pendeen Watch.
Also 3 Puffin today, the first for the year for me. Over next three weeks, peak numbers pass Cornwall heading north to the breeding grounds.

Gra Lawlor and me saw just one bird at Tamar Lake, Cornwall this week. Normally a stronghold here. Loads-a-money for white tailed eagles though.
Ad. Bonaparte’s Gull today at Copperhouse, Cornwall (8th March ‘26). One of at least three birds in the county, plus same or another 1w at R. Plym yesterday.

The wintering Dusky Warbler at Boscathnoe Res, nr Penzance. Found on 17th Dec and still present 7th March 2026. Quite amazing considering this species normally winters in South East Asia.

Hi Brian
The wintering pair of Lesser Scaup were not at Helston today (2nd March).
Ross’s Gull in Newlyn Harbour
I couldn’t resist another look at this rare gull today (Sun 1st March). Present for its 9th day. I’m sure it has developed more pink in its body plumage? Or maybe it’s just the grey background. Either way, it’s a real stunner and certainly created national interest.
Really smart images there Tom. 👍
Will you be painting a picture of the Ross’s?
Yes Andy. Just couldn’t fit them all in to the allowed text! Quite an incredible list of rare birds.
The Ross’s Gull in Newlyn Harbour today (23rd Feb). Present for third day and seems settled in the harbour and Wherrytown area.
Well worth a visit, along with the Pacific Diver, 2 Lesser Scaup, R N Duck, Kumlien’s Gull, Bonaparte’s, 2 Dusky’s and a Little Bunting😉

Ross’s Gull at Newlyn, Cornwall this morning (22nd Feb 2026). Found on the 21st in Newlyn harbour by Shaun Grose.
This is the 9th for Cornwall and my fourth. The last record was in 2020 when an adult was found at Gerrans Bay on 1st Jan.
