My occasional reminder to folks on tenure and promotion committees that there will be a cohort of people whose early careers were defined entirely by the pandemic and *waves vaguely* this nonsense, and it *will* impact their productivity.
It can't not.

It’s wildly humbling and something I take into each semester. Our students are often dealing with so much more than what we can see. And if anyone had asked me back then if I was “ok” I would have absolutely said “I’m fine”. I was not ok. But I didn’t know it.
Once upon a time I was an undergrad living (unbeknown to everyone)in poverty and with food shortages. I maintained multiple part time jobs and would sell my plasma regularly on Milwaukee’s north side. I drive by the plasma place ever day on my way to work and see how full the lots are.
Madison Sheriff Shon Barnes on today’s mass shooting:
“Stop asking why schools don’t have bullet proof glass & metal detectors at all the doors. Ask why schools HAVE to. That’s the question that needs to be asked”
Preach.
“We asked about social validity! That’s qualitative, right??”

I’m not sure how this city kid became a pseudo homesteader but I make a yearly jam to give at this time of year and this year I’ve added a mini sourdough loaf—it was a busy and fun little weekend
If you didn’t order free Covid tests through the mail this Fall, now would be a good time to do so.
I’m not holding my breath on this program continuing next year.

Hot-take; The biggest dis-engager I see in classrooms are Chromebook’s. Kids and teachers seem bored, and behaviors spike. I sorta want them to go away or have school-wide screen time rules. Is my thinking outdated??
I know it's been an awful year with uncertainty ahead, so I hope this 2024 Disability Holiday Gift Guide brings you a moment of joy among the chaos.
You'll find cool things from disabled small business owners, some book recommendations, and disability-led causes. emilyladau.com/2024/12/2024...
Tonight was the last class for ecse assessment and I always give a little “rah-rah go get ‘em teaching is the coolest” pep talk-and for the first time they clapped when I finished and it felt like I had landed the plane. ✈️
Yea…. It was pretty devastating.
Soon I'll be sharing resources on how we can support our international students in higher education going forward.
If you have suggestions of things to make sure we include in the resource list please comment, DM or email me!
And please uplift this request.

You sounded great!! It was real quick! You mentioned how when students are having really challenging behaviors it can require multiple staff, to keep the child safe and to document!
Just having my morning coffee listening to morning edition on npr, and wouldn’t ya know— @lizbettini.bsky.social was on! The story was about the sped working conditions.
Big time Sunday scaries today. 😭
Agreed figuring out what works for your kitchen is half the fun. And even when they don’t go great they are still way delicious slathered in butter! Just remember first drafts are never great!
Have you ventured into soft sourdough sandwich bread? I have a good recipe for white, but wheat keeps coming out way dense!
Even if he weren’t a right-wing quack who got famous hawking snake oil on TV, Mehmet Oz would be utterly unqualified to run CMS.
He’s trained as a surgeon. He knows jack about administering complex programs that provide health insurance to 100 million elderly, disabled, and/or low-income people.

Hi sped faculty! I’m a DGS for my department and we’re doing a lot of thinking around our core sped PhD classes. I’m curious- do all your sped doc students take:
a law class?
A grant writing class?
General sped topic?
College teaching/leadership?
Had a full house at the Illinois CEC conference during my session on collaborative between paras and teachers. It was a great community to learn in!
Y’all get to your state practitioner conferences. 1) it’s so fun, 2) practitioners are hungry for the info 3) this really is a GREAT way to get that research to practice 4) you get to translate your work to tangible strategies 5) you never know— you might find future doc students there!
