My 2nd grade son is twice exceptional - his disability is in speech and writing, but he is GT in math. One of his last papers was marked wrong every time a number was written backwards (which is part of his disability).

I want to teach factoring but don’t want to just show the algorithms (students forget those). I’ve been showing guess and check with some algorithms to support that process, but they are struggling! Thoughts?

Teachers are bad at asking for help. Math teachers in particular.
It is not a sign of weakness to know your limits - it takes great strength to ask for help!

Not sure if anyone has mentioned (and I don’t remember what it’s exactly called) but the activity where they guess the quadrilateral by feel from a bag or a box is great on so many levels
I had this absolutely brilliant thought about teaching while working out today… and now I can’t remember it.
Any thoughts as to what it was?

While many had amazing answers (and I’m not sure how to shoutout those right now), here’s why I used this:
We discussed factoring out a GCF that day. This low floor number talk paved the way for a successful lesson - so kudos to those that talked about factors!
Aside from others just the overall notion of what a percent is. Students sometimes haven’t fully developed the idea that a percent is a hundredth, so it doesn’t have meaning they just learned algorithms about percentages.
Which one is unique and why? Shoutouts to best answers!
I’ll follow-up with when and how I used this one in class (trust me, you’ll love it)!
