I'm a data scientist @ourworldindata.org and I need help from a botanist or someone local to Kyoto, Japan! 🌸

We present one of the world’s longest climate records: 1,200 years of peak cherry blossom dates in Kyoto.

The researcher who maintained it, Prof. Yasuyuki Aono, sadly passed away last year.

I'm going in person to #Evol2026 (and probably will have a poster) but I'm currently planning to give a talk in the virtual meeting: I want to reach all the people who will not be traveling to Ohio for various reasons and help support the welcome & inclusive move to virtual.

Final reminder: registration closes tomorrow (Thursday, 17:00 UK time) with more info to follow. It should be a fun and slightly different way to connect with others interested in fish behaviour!

I hope this is driving home to folks that anti-DEI/anti-woke are functioning mostly as a way to make racism more palatable by framing it as a kind of defensive reaction to an imagined unfairness.

Colour me better: fixing figures for colour blindness Images can be made more accessible by choosing hues, shapes and textures carefully.

If preparing figures please consider "colorblind friendly" approaches (www.nature.com/articles/d41...). I am missing the long-wave opsin, which manifests in strange ways: I can't discern red vs. black. This dichromacy is rare and severe, but ~300 million have more common forms addressed in link.

Our new paper looks at how warming affects cognitive trade-offs. Slower deciding individuals are more accurate. But with modest warming, they speed up and lose that advantage, compressing the range of cognitive strategies in the population. Check it out!: royalsocietypublishing.org/rspb/article...

The Olympics Has a New Sex Testing Policy. The Evidence Doesn’t Add Up I’ve spent over 10 years obsessed with so-called “gender verification” tests. Proponents claim they have history and science on their side. They don’t.

Thanks to everybody who shared and engaged with this piece! I'm closing socials for the day to protect my sanity a little, but I really do appreciate all the comments and thoughts and questions (less so the extremely aggressive emails, fix your hearts folks).

Most of what a university can offer that students can’t get elsewhere is stuff they don’t know to “demand” ahead of time precisely *because* it isn’t available elsewhere. Judging the value of a university program by how much it appeals to people who’ve by definition not encountered it is backwards.

4 weeks ago 365 65 5 4

Another thing: the rhetoric of “student demand” is (as anyone who works in a university knows) a nose of wax. Students can’t demand what isn’t offered or supported; and “demand” can be created by creating incentives and funneling resources to something brand new. These are choices, not natural laws
