A view of a purple flowering artichoke plant - a mass of purple filaments bursting from the green outer petals - in a vegetable garden (some yellow flowers and lettuces blurred behind)

These incredible Buff Tip Moths blend in so well with branches that you might mistake them for sticks. Nature's masters of disguise are truly fascinating!

A close, grounded view of asparagus being planted in a carefully prepared trench. My hands and forearms are visible, gently draping the long, pale roots of each crown over small mounds made from well-rotted manure and homemade compost. The texture of the soil is loose and dark, with the organic matter clearly worked through it. A light scattering of mycorrhizal fungi has been added over each mound, visible as a fine dusting before the soil is drawn back. The crowns are spaced methodically along the trench, each one positioned with care so the roots spread evenly. The scene captures a practical moment of planting, focused on soil preparation, structure, and the deliberate handling of each plant.
New asparagus bed, properly prepared with fresh seaweed, well-rotted manure and homemade compost. Gijnlim, Guelph Millennium and Pacific Purple going in. Good ground matters more than anything with asparagus. #KitchenGarden 🌞🌱👩🌾

Hopefully not out of the pan and into the fire 🔥 Though I would take Magyar's centre right over Orban's policies and corruption.

A traditional terracotta rhubarb forcer sits in a kitchen garden allotment bed, with pale pink rhubarb stalks and bright green tufts pushing up through the top opening. The stems are long, slender, and lightly coloured from being grown in darkness, set against early spring soil and surrounded by a mass of Fultons Strawberry Surprise and Victoria rhubarb leaves.
Rhubarb pushing its way out of the forcer on the allotment.
Grown in the dark, it comes out tender, almost silk-like, with a softer acidity. Going into a crumble later - very little sugar needed. #KitchenGarden 🎋

So rhubarb forcers do actually work. Not that I doubted it but was a little sceptical, and not that I'm a rhubarb expert by any force of the imagination 😆

Terracotta pots of narcissus, with yellow petals and long, orange trumpets. Planted last autumn. Out in time for Easter.
A weekend of gardening and writing. Narcissus Jetfire, cheering me on.

A loose bundle of three-cornered leeks spread across a worn wooden farmhouse table, their long green stems trailing and small white bell-shaped flowers still intact. The bulbs are pale and glossy with a little soil clinging to the roots. Later, the leaves will be crushed into a bright spring pesto.
Given these three-cornered leeks by our friend Diana from her allotment, just in time for the spring equinox. Softer than wild garlic, with a clean, green bite. I’ll make a pesto later; the sort that tastes of damp soil warming and longer days ahead. #SpringEquinox 🌼🌗🍃🐝⟡˚ ݁⋆˖₊.𓂃

I made a start this afternoon and have chopped down to ground level the Autumn raspberry bush. I also noticed that there is new growth on some of the canes of the summer bush. I will chop the old canes down.

I have two raspberry. bushes that I inherited and no idea the types. One fruits in July and the other September. After flash freezing do you bag them and then freeze?

Glass rectangular dish of tiramisu topped with dark chocolate shavings and fresh Glen Ample raspberries. The layers of cream and coffee-soaked sponge are visible through the sides of the dish. It sits on a rustic wooden tabletop with a small dish of cream and a handful of raspberries nearby, suggesting the fruit used in the dessert. Food photography by Deana Smart-Zegna. 🍓
Glen Ample raspberries from the garden, flash-frozen last summer, went into a coulis for tiramisu last night. Folded through the mascarpone with the coffee-soaked sponge. 🍓🧺 #kitchengarden

What a bounty of leeks you'll have next Autumn, Deana. I lile the blue de solaise, they make a wonderful soup.

Like sourdough bread, do you put the cookie dough in the fridge and if so does it rise?
I love pistachios in everything.

The UK edition of the crown silence, out now!
Happy 🇬🇧 UK pub day to THE CROWN’S SILENCE—a deeply researched narrative history of the monarchy’s centuries-long entanglement with slavery. This is the new history book the far right loathes. Please buy it b/c it’s important history but—also—it will really piss them off if it does well in the UK!!😉😘

Last week no living person had seen a #kakapo lay an egg. Now you can watch it on our webcam: Rakiura laid her second today (15:01 on 25/1/2025). She'll probably lay another in 3 days' time. #conservation #kakapo2026 #birds www.doc.govt.nz/our-work/kak...
