One day! 😄

To be honest, I want AI to take care of all the admin and repetitive work. Give me time to what I enjoy--doing the digging and thinking--slowly! 😆

Agreed. For better learning, I think the model needs to be trained in pedagogy and the module content. Integration with the curriculum, or at least teaching practice is the key. That said, when used properly, even free models can provide needed learning support, esp in high enrolment classes.

@kjhaxton.com this is a good question. What's intelligence? Can a machine that's epistemologically indifferent--GenAI being a sophisticated prediction machine--utter something that truly meaningful? #LTHEchat @nurun.bsky.social

A5 #LTHEChat @nurun.bsky.social. I find that many UGs need to 1st understand learning isn't just about facts, but knowledge co-creation & where dialogic learning comes in in this process. Also prob how to discuss. Some may even need to be convinced that sharing will not hurt their grades.

A4 #LTHEChat @nurun.bsky.social for myself I mostly use it as a tool rather than a learning partner. I ask for suggestions, evaluate what's useful & act accordingly. Not much going back and forth. I think for learning, a custom chatbot/GPT where you gamify the learning process is the way to go.

A3 #LTHEChat @nurun.bsky.social A clear understanding of why, when, and how GenAI are being used. Also need AI Fluency/Literacy/Competency--knowing the capabilities and limitations of the tool, and the ethical considerations in evaluating AI outputs.

@nurun.bsky.social very much so. Many novice learners (are pressured to?) feel learning should be easy and quick. It's the opposite.

A2 #LTHEChat @nurun.bsky.social Limitation/Danger: depending on the topic, need to be aware of models that are overly sycophantic.

A2 #LTHEChat @nurun.bsky.social Benefits: it's always there when you need it, can serve as additional opportunities; Limitation/Danger: treat it as a replacement for dialogues btw human, can't form a learning community with a machine.

A1 #LTHEChat @nurun.bsky.social dialogic learning is where discussion between students plays an important and prominent role. This can happen synchronously and asynchronously. The purpose is to 'figure' things out together, and be able to question and make reasoned arguments.

Deadline extended! Submit your proposal by 20 July & join ALTC on 23-24th October in Glasgow. I'm very excited to serve as part of the conference committee this year. We are working hard to make this year's conference inclusive and engaging! hashtag #ALTC25 #altc

Thank you to Surveillance Watch for tracking ICE contractors, many of whom were involved in surveilling and selling data of student protestors to ICE. Go to www.surveillancewatch.io for more detailed information.

Reluctant & inconsistent social media user here. Use: connect & discuss with colleagues in the same field, and keep abreast on hot topics. Value: fewer ads & trolls here; not supporting craziness #ALTM25 @alexspiers.bsky.social

@drkristandl.bsky.social Absolutely. I don't think we ask why students 'cheat' enough. Also, if an assignment is that easily done satisfactorily by AI, maybe it's the assignment that needs to change.

Agreed @drkristandl.bsky.social It's the easy/lazy way. Putting all the onerous on students. ‪‪@danceswithcloud.bsky.social‬

Thank you @saraheaton.bsky.social for such thought-provoking questions and interacting with us tonight. #LTHEchat.

‪@danceswithcloud.bsky.social‬ 100%. I think #playful-learning or #gamification is the way to help HE get out of this fear for #AI.

Q6 #LTHEChat, resilience: learning is slow and not easy; close reading skills (contra AI summary); take the scenic route is fine (experience the learning not aim for the product); fast is not necessarily better; social & emotional intelligence (for collaborating with actual human); dig literacy

‪@saraheaton.bsky.social‬ A5 I see AI literacy as part of digital literacy. Info literacy and digital literacy overlap each other in a Venn diagramme. Not all info are digital and digital literacy encompass other aspects, e.g. wellbeing, that's not necessarily related to information. #LTHEChat

Q5 #LTHEChat, I think we need an aligned approach. Each institution needs to have a centrally provisioned 'lesson' that all students should take, then the skills and content need to be reinforced in all modules.

We need to rethink learning goals, ways of learning/knowing, what's academic integrity. And All these need to be supported by training resources so that ppl understands why. (2/2, A4 #LTHEChat)

A4 #LTHEChat oh so many: we need clear guidance for both staff and students that doesn't lump all #AI use into one thing. HE needs to discuss how writing tools influence how we write & therefore how we think. (1/2)

@drkristandl.bsky.social‬, true the line is blurred! How do we decide what counts as sufficient changes that it becomes a new thing? Is this something quantifiable? Is quantifying what we should do? 🤔

A3. We need to agree on what needs to be attributed for which type of work. An essay for a language course where students are acquiring language skills will have different requirements from a journal article submission. The key is identifying where human creativity & responsibility is key. #LTHEChat

A2. It's hard to say successful at such an early stage. But I expect those that integrate #AI tools fully-identifying when and how AI tools should be used and those that give student sufficient guidance yet room for creativity--will work well. #instructional-designer

AI. @saraheaton.bsky.social may be we start with student first? What support do they need? Can #AI help? In what way? Then we guide students use the tool in a fruitful way.

#LTHEchat I think it's all about how the tool is used. If it's used in the process of learning to aide or improve learning then it's a learning tool. If it's used to produce a product to get a grade then it circumvents learning.

You mean stylish? 😉

There was a time in Chinese culture when a person's penmanship was considered indicative of their education level. Good hand writing was very handy in hand-written exam. What's pleasant to read tended to get benefit of doubt from the markers.
