Emerging victorious from the Nora virus, I actually had a decent writing sprint this evening. Shame I'm into Act 2 of Lonely Ship's finale storyline, and everyone's a bit sad! Decent writing, though!

Why do I, a British SF writer, feel called out by the American one?

Can I just say, it's embarrassing how long it took me to get into Code Geass. This nonsense anime is awesome actually.

The Lonely Ship crew pick up the phrase "peace among the stars" as a salutation in the alien Forge. Beginning as a frontiersman's good-luck charm, the phrase ended up crossing cultural lines and is well recognised wherever they go. In later books, they end up bringing it home.

As a bonus, she's my wife's favourite character!

Across all of Lonely Ship, I think the 'silliest' award goes to Fei Li, a feline alien who joins the crew in Book 2. Fei comes from a pre-medieval world, and though she's a fast learner, a lot of space-age tech goes over her head at first.

Cassia is a traveller from one of Layman's Accord of Regents to the north. She was apprenticed under a roaming witch for much of her life, giving her pragmatism and an eye for money. She arrives in Layman to set up a shop, and she and Elliot clash when she pushes the terms of her stay. She's cool.

The episodic nature of Laymen means Elliot makes a new friend in each chapter. And I don't want to just list them all 'cos that would be spoilers. So I'll just focus on the one who I think gets a mention most often outside of her own chapter, the alchemist Cassia the Red.

“Are you feeling alright?”
“Sleepy. Hungry.”
“Well, there’s food on the ship for you. But first…” Luc turned his eyes on Marcus, and they hardened once more into steel. “Tell me honestly. Did these alien freaks do anything improper to you while you were in their care?”
“Huh?” Petra followed his eyes, taking in the crew of the Black Husk. “No. They were fine.”
“You’re sure?”
“I mean…” Petra mirrored Luc by narrowing her eyes at Marcus. “They had a lot of sex.”
“With you?!”
“What? No, I just mean in general. It was indecent. They didn’t… I mean…” Petra looked away with crimson lighting up her cheeks. “I mean… nothing. Nothing.”

I reckon the only reason I would give up writing is if I ran out of time (v.possible as my job and family circumstances change) or ideas (less likely).

I think my publishing style will naturally change as times change, but I hope to never lose writing altogether.

Happy Sunday, #AprilAdventure -rs!

Here's a snip of Elliot finally standing up for himself and his role in the city. I like to think of this as the moment his mission stops being something forced on him, and turns into something he controls for himself.

Used my one #lantern too recently, so here's 'torch' from The Runechildren, Book Six of the Lonely Ship Saga.

Hal's pre-breakout op brings him face to face with one of the guards.

I came up with Lonely Ship right right right at the end, days away from publishing! That's three books' worth of material under the working title 'Mythmakers' Legacy' before realising I didn't like it!

Took some brainstorming to get a title that was suitably romantic, and I love it even now!

Happy Saturday, #TimeTravelAuthors! Here's my #point.

In this excerpt from Lonely Ship 1, the ship details her reason for nominating Miriham as the new captain. As befitting a ship powered by emotional connection, her priorities are a little off.

Other than a bit of blood loss and a knock on the head, Elliot's first struggle is in Chapter 3 when he comes up against the mischievous Asura. His nature and his role both encourage him to trust others, to expect the best of them. Asura tries to take advantage of that for money!

Then there's, uh, whatever this is

I like to think we can have fun with religion, it doesn't always have to be dour or serious. And the idea of a gothic, femme, sex-positive Almighty is one I'm enjoying playing around with!

Then there's the precursor Mythmakers, and I'd be lying if I said that's not a conversation on the nature of divinity. Distant, strange, occasionally acting outside of our understanding, aiming for a goal we can't fathom. I haven't ended that story yet, so curious if I find any revelations!

I had to think about this one. In Lonely Ship, there aren't any faith communities in the scope of the story, but many Forge factions use religious terminology as branding. Alina's Disciples, the Infernal Order's Deacons... I think the frontier invites whole-heart dedication.

“Would you like it to be your fault?”
He wasn’t sure what she meant by that. Marcus leaned back and met her eyes, glittering through her eyelashes at him.
“You are yet unsatisfied,” Miriham whispered. “If you would like some culpability for my weakness, I would happily take your consent and engage in a little further sin. Perhaps with my mouth?”
Marcus swallowed. He said nothing for one second, two seconds, five seconds, ten seconds…
“N-No,” he croaked. “Better not.”

💯💯💯 There's some great storytelling potential in science and religion forming a cohesive whole, or bringing out the worst in each other.

I'll skip Elliot's first unexpected encounter to keep this chat chaste!

Though many non-humans desire residency in Layman to build a life, others still need humans for sustenance. Chapter 2 brings Elliot against a creature that wants entrance so she can eat people. It's a dilemma!

“I know who I’d blame for the way you feel, Vio. I blame him too.”
A rumble in the ship. “Marcus Albright.”
“Marcus fucking Albright!” laughed Alina. “Hero of the revolution and almighty cucklord!”
“I simply do not understand what she sees in him!” Vio continued, much louder this time. “I prided myself on knowing Avalynne’s heart better than anyone! And in the blink of an eye, I am suddenly usurped from that position by a short-lived human from another galaxy! One who possesses none of Avalynne’s creative vigour, her passion, her courage! How could such a man truly see the heart of a woman such as Avalynne, I asked myself! And infuriatingly…!”
“He’s right,” Alina whispered.
“He is right!” Vio agreed. “He does understand her! Because the woman I knew changed while I was unconscious! And I can think of only one reason why that should be the case!”
“Because he changed her,” Alina picked up. “He wormed his way into her heart and changed it. Weakened it.”
“Weakened it…” Vio repeated. “Made her turn her eyes from that which matters! The freedom to set one’s own path in the universe!”
