Happy Trope Tuesday! Today's topic:

The World Has a Daily Reset. Except for a Few People.

Everyone else loops. A small group remembers. The problem? They don’t all want the loop to end.

Is this a trope you like? Where have you seen it done well?

I'm embarrassed to say it took me WAY TOO LONG to realize this. You don't have to write in order, you don't have to always write scenes that will be part of the final story.

By rook or crook, just write the stuff you're excited about and let that momentum carry you through the 1st draft #Scriptsky

Story Structure: 7 Types All Writers Should Know Discover 7 of the most popular story structure models used by writers today. Suitable for authors, playwrights, and screenwriters.

Do your stories follow a structure - if so, what? I'm familiar with, and have used, a few on this list, but I'm curious how other writers write. What benefits do you see in different structures? reedsy.com/blog/guide/s... #writing #writingcommunity

The most dangerous line in any draft:
"The reader will figure it out."
Sometimes true. Usually an excuse to avoid the harder work of making it clear without making it obvious.

Hey, #RevPit. Let's talk about wordcount.

There are specific wordcount expectations that vary depending on your manuscript's age group and genre.

It is better to be the *rule* rather than the *exception* here. I'll explain why:

There are so many ways to structure a story — save the cat; Freitag graph; Hero's journey. On and on.

The author Theresa Okokon introduced my students and me to a new one: Sankofa structure. And it's brilliant:

Does Creating a Timeline of Events Make Sense When Writing Fantasy? Fantasy stories often seem boundless. Entire worlds are created from nothing—new kingdoms, magical systems, ancient histories, and epic conflicts. Because of this scope, many writers eventually ask an important question: Should I create a timeline of events for my fantasy world? The quick answer is yes—creating a timeline can greatly enhance the structure, consistency, and realism of your story.

Fantasy worlds have histories too. Creating a timeline can keep your worldbuilding consistent and your story free of plot holes. Learn why timelines matter in fantasy writing. #FantasyWriting #Worldbuilding #FantasyAuthors #WritingCommunity #WritingTips #FantasyWorld #CreativeWriting

On this week’s #Scriptsky #Screenwriting thread, I’m talking STAKES.

What are stakes? Well, your protagonist should have a want - a tangible and/or emotional goal. Stakes are the consequences of success and/or failure for that goal. They’re also the reason your protagonist + the audience cares.

CREATIVITY TIP

Outline a book before you read it, or read the first half, stop and write an outline of the rest. Imagine what you will find (or what you want to find).

It will provide a good exercise for your imagination.

Should your fantasy world be “generic?” On the power of presumption in fantasy novels and the shortcuts that make your story sweeter.

"Perhaps in time medieval Europe won’t be be synonymous with fantasy and instead the genre will be defined by magic and monsters rather than castles and chivalric orders of knights."

Sudden realization, em-dash versus brackets. Brackets feel more textual. Em-dashes, like commas, are oral & aural; they tell you how to read it aloud, and how to hear it in your head. And that's why I use 'em so much in fiction: storytelling. (And why I defend most of my commas.) #writing #editing

You’re writing a script about a killer shark, reach Act 3 and need to figure out how to kill this unkillable monster. What if it chomps on an oxygen tank and blows itself up? That could work but must be set up earlier. So this week’s #Scriptsky #Screenwriting thread is on PLANTS AND PAYOFFS.

There is only one piece of advice I can confidently give from my lowly perch in this game.

You'll never make it anywhere if you don't actually write and finish it (it being a screenplay, story, novel, or whatever.)

You have to finish before anything else can happen.
