Even at a time full of strange and enigmatic reptiles, Helveticosaurus was one of the most bizarre species in the Triassic. It specifically lived during the middle Triassic in what is now Europe

Black-and-white pencil sketches of four prehistoric synapsids: three different gorgonopsians in a column on the far left side of the page, and then a scene of two Hippidion taking up the rest of the space. The top gorgonopsian is Dinogorgon, rolling around on the ground happily. The middle gorgonopsian is the small Viatkogorgon, swimming above the viewer with a temnospondyl in its mouth. The bottom gorgonopsian is a bust of the newly named Njalila, just yawning. The two Hippidion that take up most of the paper are a pair of stallions fighting in the open habitats of the high Andes. One of them is in the process of kicking the other’s snout, likely breaking the long nasal bone characteristic of this genus. In the distance, a Spectacled Bear stands up to get a better view of the battle.

Tonight’s flocking-together #Paleostream was nothing but synapsids, three gorgonopsians in a row (Dinogorgon, Viatkogorgon, and Njalila) and then the Pleistocene South American horse Hippidion. #paleoart #sciart #permian #pleistocene
