This piece was a fascinating up and down to construct and to research. While certainly iconic our understanding of these faunas is not complete and misinformation and memes plaster ones way. Center of this piece...

People like to think of the Carboniferous as the time of the giant insects but they actually reached their peak in the early Permian. And here in Kansas we find the largest: Meganeuropsis, which in our case in going after a...

Spinosaurus mirabilis, Titanotaria, Hanssuesia and Armenohyrax!
Note that I am very unsure about how to reconstruct the facial structure of Titanotaria, but it's #WorldSealDay!

a stylised drawing of a person leaning against a Lotosaurus, both of them are sleeping the person in the image is my sona Lotosaurus is a poorly described pseudosuchian reptile that had no teeth and was most likely herbivorous, it's also known for the sail on its back created from its tall neural spines
a Metriacanthosaurus swims in moderately deep coastal waters, a Thalattosuchus swims over to investigate the larger predator Metriacanthosaurus is a large theropod dinosaur known from few remains, here i've chosen to depict the top part of its body (including its head) above the water out of view as this shows the area we can relatively confidently reconstruct Thalattosuchus is a type of fully marine crocodile with very reduced front limbs, long paddle-like hindlimbs, and a vertical fluke on its tail. the group of pseudosuchians it belongs to preserve highly reduced scales, likely an adaptation for their primarily aquatic lifestyles
a surfacing Pterocetus is illuminated by an artificial light from behind the camera. its rostrum breaks the water's surface first, with its wide head disturbing the incoming water in a smooth wave that washes over and crashes behind it Pterocetus is a beaked whale of uncertain affinity, what we do know is that both species had very wide heads, particularly around the areas where the eyes sat, though this would have been obvious in life, it would not have been as obvious as in the bones due to soft tissue smoothing out the form
a Caelestiventus has landed on a small island of rocks to take a drink at night, an artificial light from behind the camera illuminates it with great contrast Caelestiventus is a kind of dimorphodontid pterosaur, like its relatives, it would've been more terrestrially adapted while still being able to fly. it had a long vaguely oval shaped head with thin and long interlocking teeth at the front, and leaf-shaped cutting teeth at the back
here's what we sketched on this week's #Paleostream flocking!

Doodles from Friday's flocking #paleostream featuring Tusciziphius, Cyrtograptus, Callawayia, and Doryaspis.
Result from the Sulphur Mountain Formation #paleostream! This formation made it onto the wheel as it is the last refuge of the last eugeneodonts, the group that gave us Helicoprion. Most prominently we have here Fadenia, a late surviving durophagous member of this group...

two Tusciziphius are illuminated by an artificial light during the night, one has albinism while the other is a more normal looking colouration Tusciziphius is an extinct species of basal beaked whale that inhabited various parts of Europe and North America throughout the Miocene and Pliocene. both species are only known from skulls, but the skulls provide a unique morphology in the presence of a raised "keel" on their fused premaxillary bones. this may have been an attachment point for a large melon or used for something else, we still arent sure
a Cyrtograptus floats suspended amongst other plankton. the small colonial organism floats along the current, each of the small zooid's tentacles catching bits of ditritus and other plankton that happen to float by Cyrtograptus is a kind of planktonic marine invertebrate that may seem closer related to cnidarians like siphonophores, but is actually closer related to us and echinoderms as it's a hemichordate. this genus is characterised by its spiral coiling with primary and secondary branches of zooids growing from the outer edge of the whorl
a Callawayia has just surfaced to take a breath, it quickly darts back underwater as to not be ambushed from below Callawayia is an ichthyosaur from Canada with a proportionally longer tail than other icthyosaurs, ichthyosaurs were a group of very successful fully marine reptiles that appeared similar to cetaceans however they swam side to side rather than up and down
during sunrise, a spooked Doryaspis kicks up sand with its tail and cornual plates. it shoots jets of water out of its branchial openings from the force of sucking in water to breathe as it makes its escape Doryaspis is a kind of jawless fish that inhabited the Devonian of Norway, it is well known for its heavily armoured body, long cornual plates that look like wide pectoral fins, and long pseudorostrum. while the use of its pseudorostrum are heavily debated, biomechanical studies of the fish show that it wouldve swam the most efficiently close to the bottom of the water.

The "valley of the whales" as it is better known is a classic locality from the late Eocene of Egypt. Most famously it is place filled with the remains of early whales, Archaeoceti, but it's less straight forward as a piece than one...
A black-and-white pencil sketch of a shark, Physogaleus, nibbling on the tattered edge of a severed head of the whale Basilosaurus. The large head is lying on its side on the seafloor with mouth wide open, while the shark’s body is very curvy as it attempts to slice off a bite. Near the head on the seafloor is a much smaller crab.
Quick sketch of the tiger-shark-cousin Physogaleus nibbling on the severed head of what would normally be its predator, Basilosaurus. A scene in the shallow waters of late Eocene Egypt, sketched during the Wadi-El-Hitan formation #Paleostream. #paleoart #sciart #shark #whale
