Fresh off the press in NCTE’s Language Arts! "Producing beyond the Binaries: Playful Languaging in Kindergarten Classrooms.” This piece celebrates and learns alongside the "unruly" meaning-making of young children: mittens, cats, bunnies, farts, marshmallow feet, and more 🐱

This morning’s #NCTE2025: Ran from a showing of The Librarians with @maggietokudahall.bsky.social to hear from @ncte.org‘s Intellectual Freedom Fellow, Ricki Ginsberg, asks colleagues talk about the data from 4000+ surveys of ELA teachers how they experience censorship.

A6: Envisioning #literacies! "Relational witnessing" as pedagogy: the attunement to a child's meaning-making; methodologies that can bring the child's process, embodied labors, and materiality into the same frame... how we go back to the children.

A2: Tbh, every single #literacies chat impacts my thinking. It's hard for me to be timely, concise, and deep with limited characters. However! There was one about relational (and maybe play-based?) literacies that felt especially generative. If I'm still replying days later... that's a good thing.

A1: I originally joined the #literacies chat on Twitter as a grad student at UT Austin. It's been great to "meet" like-minded folks, build thinking together, and learn with scholars I admire.

Jane has always been an inspiration to me—unwavering in her scholarly discernment, relational ethics, and advocacy. May she rest in peace. 💗

Our libraries and library professionals are keystones of our communities fostering minds and offering services to individuals regardless of background. We must lift them up, especially this National Library Week, and demand that Trump and DOGE do not gut support for these vital institutions.

'See you in court': Teachers union vows to fight Trump's Education Department order Randi Weingarten, the head of the American Federation of Teachers, issued a stark warning to the Trump administration.

Without a strong Department of Education, kids from working class families will be left behind, unable to access the education they need to succeed.

We stand with our affiliated unions as they fight this illegal order.

Constellating Literacy: A Diffractive Analysis of Policy Implementation and Classroom Practices in Early Literacy Education | International Critical Childhood Policy Studies Journal

"Controlled silence, dismissal of culturally responsive lesson planning, & behavioral contingencies for teaching & learning are not written into policy; however, the social powers they convey are disseminated through materiality & relationality every day." journals.sfu.ca/iccps/index....

So, I've been mulling on this. Either I don't understand what you mean, or I disagree. In early childhood literacy, I see identity and materiality as tremendously intertwined. I'd love to hear your arguments at some point. :)
