This situation in the #CentralAsianFlyway is reflected in the report by @stateofindiasbirds.in - most high priority sps were migrants: ducks & wadersv that were once very common.

Wonder about the situation of #passerines with very little data

US tech companies shouldn't get to decide that European (or any other!) telescopes are now obsolete in the name of profits, and we need to find ways to get policymakers to care about them & to fight back 🔭☄️

This is a really nice analysis of the impact of proposed satellite constellations on ground-based astronomy. 🔭☄️

One thing that might otherwise get lost in the margins is that these satellite constellations would waste many, many billions of euros of government funding spent on telescopes.

Happy International Women's Day!

Perfect time for me to (re)share our white paper on increasing the retention of women in professional astrophysics (really full of suggestions that broaden participation in academic science in general).

I’ve seen some posts recently, about the value of basic research, in light of funding cuts and demands that research have immediate economic justification.

Let me collect some info here, in a thread, about why it’s a bad idea to attach those sorts of demands to funding. 🧵 🧪 ⚛️

☄️ Comet watchers: March targets

• C/2026 A1 (MAPS) racing toward the Sun ☀️ could it become naked-eye?
• C/2025 R3 (PANSTARRS) back and possibly brightening into binocular range
• C/2024 E1 (Wierzchos) still observable with small telescopes 🔭

Today, on Women in Science Day, we remember Maria Winkelmann — a pioneering astronomer who, from Berlin, discovered a comet on April 21, 1702. She became the first woman to achieve this feat, and her perseverance left a lasting mark on early astronomy 👇

Episode 131: Space Weather and the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad in India - AstrotalkUK We are increasingly aware of the impact of space weather on spacecraft in space and, occasionally, on electrical power transmission on Earth, but what about its impact on the Earth's atmosphere? That is exactly the research interest of Professor Pallam Raju, Dean of the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad, India. Founded in 1947, the PRL is one of India's most prestigious scientific institutions, not least because it was founded by Dr Vikram Sarabhai.

We are increasingly aware of the impact of space weather on spacecraft in space and, occasionally, on electrical power transmission on Earth, but what about its impact on the Earth’s atmosphere? Explore with this podcasthttps://astrotalkuk.org/episode-131-space-weather/

Pre-perihelion evolution of the NiI/FeI abundance ratio in the coma of the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS. From extreme to normal Emission lines of FeI and NiI are commonly found in the coma of Solar System comets, even at large heliocentric distances. These atoms are most likely released from the surface of the comet's nucleus ...

For 3I/ATLAS's closest approach to Earth, have an accepted paper: as it got closer to the Sun, 3I's production of atomic nickel and iron in its coma evolved to a ratio like that of Solar System comets and 2I ☄️🔭

In a crumbling four-story wada in Pune’s old quarter, an upstairs room stayed stubbornly off the grid.

There, a small woman in a plain cotton sari wrote longhand by daylight or by kerosene lamp.

This was Hema Sane, a botanist who turned her life into an experiment in ecological consistency.

A comet with a thin and long tail and a small green coma.

A rather bright comet has been discovered in images of the spacecrafts SOHO/SWAN & STEREO - preliminary designated SWAN25B. It's 7-8 mag and w/ a nice tail. No orbit yet, but from the available data I suspect it could pass very close to Earth soon.
