Pippin's bid for attention...
Posts by Beau as in Handsome
More tracing! Some details look wrong after posterization (the eyes e.g.). I'll sketch of the sketchy bits separately so that they have better detail.
Pippin is adamant that he have my FULL attention after patterning.

Doop doop doop.
Very satisfying.

Thanks so much Cola! I hope that's the case. ๐ค๐ป
The full pattern, a 40-page printout. I'm in the second-guessing phase, which will last the entirety of the remaining process. Yay me! What stamina!
Pippin does't second guess, he only supervises.

I appreciated you writing it and keeping the rest of us apprised of the goings on!
It's kinda at an unfair advantage because it has the top layer of shadowing on it. But the big question is how it will look with the rest of the portrait. Revisions may be necessary depending on how that goes. ๐
Gotta get comfy!
Those saturated colors are just yummy!
Full body portrait of artist in a cross-legged position with arms moving upward in a stretching motion. The subject is nude from the waist up, with the lower torso missing and the legs crossed. The portrait is made with overlapping green fabric, the topmost fabric being a darker green with a pebble-like pattern.
A table top is strewn with disjointed pieces of the self-portrait pattern. A green fabric with a darker green pebble-like pattern cut in pieces recognizable as a face and torso are backlit by a lightboard.
A portrait of the artist from the waist up and thigh down in a cross-legged position. The subject is stretching their arms upward. The portrait is on a white background and created with layers of batik-dyed fabric with random patterns. The bottommost layers are green and a medium value purple provides contrast and shape to the torso and legs. A dark green topmost layer shadows the face and hands.
Phase 1 of a self-portrait. I'm still working out phase 2.
The portrait felt Shrekish, so I replaced the green with a contrasting fabric. I like this version, but a friend preferred Shrek. Reminder: someone will like your art even when you don't!

To me, this reads as a really gorgeous and interesting color exercise.
Maybe 6ish? A few are in a gestational stage. Three are massive (probably small quilts for most people, large for me) but I have no room. ๐ Two are close to a finish (so I've skipped off to greener pastures), three in the patterning stage. Two with fabric on background. Pay no mind to the math here.
Aww thanks!
A white bedspread is covered in folded lengths of cotton batik fabric in light lavenders, blues, middle values of oranges and pinks and dark values in eggplant purple and deep maroon. Dark shades of folded flannels and wools are also spread across the blanket and some notions yo the right of the folded fabric. A clear plastic bag with the words The Quilting Bee written on it is beside the fabric.
Closeup of orange batik fabric.
Closeup of pink and purple batiks.
Closeup of lavender and light blue fabric.
I'm away from my fabric and ongoing projects through this weekend, but I shan't let that keep me from my preciouses...
As in fabric. Preciouses fabrics.
Thank you!
I've done a batting-free wall quilt that I hand embroidered. It feels like I may have used interfacing to stiffen it. Another suggestion I've seen is to use felt instead of batting to minimize loft. You could create a few testers to see what you like best. I agree canvas stretchers would be ideal.
This is a quandry I know well. Keeping the crisp lines of geometric shapes is why I leave the paper in my paper piecing projects and frame them rather than quilt them. What kind of batting have you considered?
Thanks! Portraits are my specialty right now but this technique and approach is new to me so I'm dealing with the fear of creating a critter spawned from the uncanny valley. I suppose if that happens I can put a jaunty hat on it.
To the right of the image is a large easel with partially-assembled fabric collage of a cat.
A cat looks up at the viewer with pink lines drawn over its face and body to denote pattern pieces.
A white dog on a fluorescent yellow leash stands on gravel and sniffs at the base of a tree.
Internal screaming continues.
But, you know, there's progress.

Your use of value to create dimension is really exceptional--love this!
Large easel holds a partially-completed fabric collage if a cat that looks disjointed in its assembly.
Zoomed out picture of easel with partially-completed fabric collage of a cat. The easel is to the right of a couch, and in front of the couch are stacks of minibolted fabric in a range of browns, tans, and cream colors.
A cream colored dog is laying on a cream colored blanket on a blue-gray couch. He is partially camouflaged because of the similarity in colors.
I'm in the depths of the ugly messy phase of the fabric collage process.
Let the internal screaming commence.
Pippin is working on his camouflage skills (I told him to try closing his eyes for the next picture).

A white dog is sitting on a loveseat surrounded by a partially finished portrait, colorful fabric, and an open laptop.
The real artist behind the account! He IS a very handsome boy.
P.S. Hovering disjointed eyes are so creepy.
