Organisms exist across so many scales in space and time, and all of them seem to matter and influence ach other.
This can make it hard to talk coherently about biology. The genome, as I wrote for Broadcast in February, basically defies metaphor.

I'm a former geobiologist, so I'm used to thinking of how things at VERY different scales in space and time (bacteria + the Earth) interact.
But it gets so tricky! The loops of causation get so tangled.

It was interesting to witness how the K2-18b case was received among astronomers. Clearly it was negative. With a possible sign for life you need to be very careful. Also funny to see that it's not always the media that blows things up, but also 'top' scientists and their university PR divisions.
K2-18b is the name of an exoplanet that got quite some media attention recently, due to 'evidence' of a so-called bio-signature. But not really:
