Organisms exist across so many scales in space and time, and all of them seem to matter and influence ach other.
This can make it hard to talk coherently about biology. The genome, as I wrote for Broadcast in February, basically defies metaphor.

I'm a former geobiologist, so I'm used to thinking of how things at VERY different scales in space and time (bacteria + the Earth) interact.
But it gets so tricky! The loops of causation get so tangled.
For the best example of this, look to biology.

Something complexity science teaches that I've found helpful in basically every field I cover as a science journalist is to be aware of scale.
Depending on what scale you look at, you might see (or miss) very different things.

I'll be here posting occasionally until Friday. Look for the #FRONTIERSTakeover tag.
After that, you'll find me:
1) Trying to be insightful and funny on my personal account: @elisecutts.bsky.social
2) Writing my newsletter about science, scicomm, and making kowledge matter in our crazy times:

Hello Bluesky! I'm @elisecutts.bsky.social and this week is my #FRONTIERSTakeover.
I'm a science journalist who writes for magazines like Quanta and Sci Am, and I'm currently a journalist in residence at @csh.ac.at in Vienna.
I was told I should post photos of myself. So... here I am:
I’m ending my #FRONTIERSTakeOver with a shot from a nice tapas dinner with other fellows in Lisbon. For the next two days we will gather here for a training workshop. If you’re interested in hearing more about my residency in Copenhagen and the #EHDS make sure to follow me @tomtj.es!

It’s a travel day for me but that doesn’t mean I can’t learn more about the datafication of healthcare.

Three columns: 1 - Dog Bites Man: non-story, no news value 2 - Man Bites Dog: story, news value 3 - How I Decided To Bite The Dog: narrative, emotional value
In a writing clinic, I gave researchers some advice this afternoon. What do you think of my expansion of the classic man-bites-dog example?

On the second day of the #EHDS Forum workshop, I got introduced to a new academic format: Walk & Talk. My matching partner and I went to the nearby botanic garden and got inspiration from some older academics.

I had the pleasure of hosting a panel today: “European Health Data Space – Why should we care?” There was a lot of skepticism in the room whether the #EHDS can become a success. If our health data can be put to use for public and economic benefit remains an open question.

Nordhavn in Copenhagen that has been developed as a 5-minute city. When apartment buildings, office buildings, hotels and other service functions mix, everything is within reach without a car. One building combines a grocery store, parking garage and rooftop gym. #weekendexplorer #FRONTIERSTakeOver
I was asked to give writing advice to scientists. I’d love to hear from you! #followerpower
JOURNALISTS: What advice do you have?
SCIENTISTS: What are your main issues with writing?

Title slide saying “Chronic Interfacing - Towards a Post-Neo-Liberal Politics of Digital Convenience?”
Fascinating guest lecture by Benjamin Lipp (Technical University of Denmark) today about “smart pain technology”, that is supposed to help chronic pain patients. But he reminds us: “convenience requires attention.” The idea of “set it and forget it” often doesn’t manifest.
