Photo of an adult male Gang-gang Cockatoo, portrait from the neck up. It is grey with light grey/green bars on the edges of its feathers, and bright red feathers on its head and crest. Its eye is dark and its stout beak is white.
As before, but a different, younger male Gang-gang Cockatoo. Its red head feathers aren't fully developed yet. It is biting the end of a stick.
As before, but an an adult female. its head feathers are grey and its belly feathers have cream, yellow, and orange bars.

The theme is #Edge.
Volcano, plateau, bones, death. New Mexico *is* the freaking edge of everything you thought you knew and why I'm here.
FLOWER GARDEN

Only in New Mexico! A man can dream, right? I'll plant around the bones. Just grabbed these elk and something-something pieces from the neighborhood repository. Still pretty gamy, so monsters may carry them off. What a life.
Photograph of a very small bee walking on the anthers of a cluster of bright red flower stamens. The bee is mostly black, with short cream and brown hairs on its head and thorax.

#kakapo Esperance with chick Elsie-A2-2026 on Whenua Hou. At a month old the chicks start to get coloured feathers and males will weigh around 1kg - not far off the mother's weight. But she's still less than halfway through raising them in the nest! #kakapo2026 #conservation #birds #wildlife
Went spotlighting near home last night and heard (but didn’t see) a couple of animals in a couple of different locations make the same strange sound that I thought must be an owlet-nightjar, but it didn’t sound quite right. And that’s because it was this!!!! youtu.be/yTTgEOczY_Q?...

🎼Sound up for the dawn chorus… West Aussie style 🎼
This large flock of Black Cockatoos (presumably Carnaby’s given the numbers) comes over our house at around dawn each morning currently.
Best alarm clock you could ever have!!

A common redpoll in flight against a mottled v brown and orange background. The redpoll is mostly striped brown on white with a bright red cap. It’s tiny beak is yellow! The background colour is out of focus branches lit by the sun.
We had another big “spring” snowstorm yesterday and I think some of the birds who arrived early are questioning their judgement.
But not the redpolls, they’ve been here for weeks and don’t care at all!
This common redpoll female was zipping down to the ground to forage!

It's #BatAppreciationDay.
Bats are an incredibly diverse group (around 1500 species - the second largest group of #mammals), performing incredibly important roles in their ecosystems. 🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇
Plus, some of them are bright orange. 🧡

Photo of an immature male Gang-gang Cockatoo on the end of a thin broken branch. one foot is holding onto the branch, the other is raised as it repositions. The bird is grey with bars on the ends of all its feathers in colours ranging from cream to yellow to orange, with some green washes on the wings. Is head and crest are feathers are partially bright red.
As before, but the bird is lower on the branch holding onto it with both feet and is now facing down.

A fulvous fruit bat flies with its wings at the top of their stoke, with a baby clinging to its belly. In the background, four smaller bats cling to a stone wall.
As if it wasn't incredible enough to modify their hands so a wing is formed between the fingers, #bats can also fly with their babies attached. 🦇
Look closely! 👀

Can you #FindThatLizard?
Tonight you're looking for a western fence lizard, Sceloporus occidentalis.
I saw this individual while I was visiting the California Botanic Garden in Claremont. It is one of the most beautiful gardens I've ever visited, and it was teeming with lizards.
