An up-and-down #MammalWatching trip to #Madeira: I failed to find any #whales, but I did glimpse of one of the world's rarest marine #mammals. 🦭 High seas cancelled my boat to the main colony of Mediterranean monk #seals, but one swam through the island's main marina! 🤩I've added it to the list:
Nothing but the sounds of waves against our hull, and #dolphins breathing. 🌊🐬

Another mammal star of the Sierra de Andujar - Iberian Ibex. I'd seen the species wild before in the Sierra de Guadarrama, but a different subspecies, so this was still technically a lifer of sorts..! #ibex #goats #mammalwatching #wildlife #andalucia #cabramontes
There's nothing quite like when wild #mammals come to say hi on their own terms. 🐬🐬

Any animal with "common" in its name gets a raw deal. It's impossible not to feel joy watching "common #dolphins" at play. 🐬🐬🐬

I saw this cat at at this spot at the Los Escoriales viewpoint, in the Sierra de Andujar - part of the wider Sierra Morena that was one of only two areas of Iberia where the lynx never died out. An absolute treat, and a sighting that is a real credit to species #conservation. #mammalwatching
A tawny and spotted Iberian lynx watches from a shady meadow
A species we very nearly lost, with only around 100 animals at the turn of the century. Thanks to habitat restoration, the protection of their main prey - rabbits, and a vitally important captive breeding and reintroduction scheme, the population is now well over 2000 animals. #lynx #mammalwatching
A tawny and spotted Iberian Lynx peers up from the side of a rock
Just back from 6 days in Andalusia. Sometimes you come back having seen wonderful things you probably have to be quite nerdy to appreciate. Sometimes, after 6+ hours on a viewpoint with ibex and vultures and a trickle of similar nerds, you end up seeing an Iberian Lynx. #lynx #cats #mammalwatching
A wombat stands face-on on top of a massive green buttongrass tussock, with eucalyptus trees standing in the mist behind
Wombats are pretty big animals - almost a metre long - but Tasmanian buttongrass tussocks make them look tiny.
