Allegorical figure on the former Library and Post Office (now the Women's Library) Bridgeton. I suspect he is the West Wind, bringer of Trade.

'165 Stars Found in the Glasgow Women's Library' - Shauna McMullan (2012)

1 month ago 5 2 1 0

To mark the Glasgow Women’s Library’s 21st anniversary, the Library commissioned 21 women artists to create new works inspired by items and artefacts in their collections.

Shauna McMullan combed GWL’s lending library collecting the asterisks and starred items from hundreds of the donated volumes.

Checking out what @womenslibrary.bsky.social is doing would be worthwhile in terms of a staged approach to becoming operational net zero and around programming.

Valentine’s Day: Love and Loathing in Postcards of the Suffrage Age | Glasgow Women’s Library My PhD research focusses on several themes that emerge in ‘comic’ anti-suffrage / anti-women postcards produced by private companies between 1900 and 1930, and also examines the handwritten messages…

For Galentine's / Valentine's Day, a repost ...

Sending you all love 😍

We're @womenslibrary.bsky.social The carpet, we were told, was made by Templeton's but not in their premises on the Green - we think after the merger to create Stoddards, so it may date from the 1980s / 1990s in one of the several refurbishments of the Library building. But don't take that as fact!

A 'comic' drawn postcard image that forefronts an older, conventionally 'unattractive' woman standing on her own, dressed in a tie (suggesting masculinity), and wearing the colours of the Women's Social and Political Union - she is a suffragette. Behind, two heterosexual couples, with younger, conventionally 'attractive' women are kissing under mistletoe. The text reads: 'I vote you a Merry Christmas. Hoping you won't get left, when you want your rights this day.'

This is one of hundreds of anti-suffrage postcard images from the early 20th century that I’m examining for my PhD. Postcard manufacturers knew that misogyny made them money – even / especially at Christmas. Plus ça change.

Merry Christmas!
