So I don't think there was previously any evidence either way (that I know of), so it was more of an open question. It was possible that European settlers had brought it with them, but our results suggest that wasn't the case

Really happy to have played a small part in this cool piece of work led by @guido-valverde.bsky.social and @msabrysarhan.bsky.social. We characterised S. pyogenes in a pre-Columbian Bolivian mummy (suggesting circulation before European contact) #VivaBolivianMummies

We're excited for @microbiologysociety.org #microbio26 to begin but also to share the fantastic news that our @eh-hayles.bsky.social's latest paper is now preprinted. If you wanna hear about temporal dynamics & acquisition of Shiga toxin subtype stx2a within #STEC in England go see her poster at A39
The second, I’m at #microbio26 in Belfast presenting the next stages of the project, looking at the gene, genome and phage variation of #stx2a. Come see me at poster A039!
What a wonderful start to @microbiologysociety.org #microbio26 with an interactive session on celebrating & promoting actions advancing #EDI followed by @prideinmicro.bsky.social lecture on From visibility to belonging. Its been wonderful to see this network grow. Read more here: microb.io/4mnraQc
Absolutely stellar start to #Microbio26 with the EDI prize lecture to @prideinmicro.bsky.social ! Well done and so well deserved @landongetz.bsky.social @edelplopez.bsky.social @bfrancescol.bsky.social 👏
And the poster is up at #microbio26! Come and find me at A037 to talk all things biofilm :)

Excited to share our latest publication from the PhageLand project which investigated the effects of a phage cocktail, designed for wastewater bioremediation, on Daphnia magna microbiome and life-history parameters! 🌊💧

🚨Two exciting updates! The first, our new preprint assessing the dynamics of Shiga toxin subtype #stx2a in #STEC across England, 2016-2024 is now live!
Read the preprint here: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
First preprint from my PhD research under the supervision of Ed Galyov and @milja001.bsky.social
We developed a novel bacterial minicells platform combined with #metagenomics to selectively enrich cognate #phages from complex environmental samples and investigated phage-host interactions #phagesky
Whenever I presented Phold, I was frequently asked "can you do the same beyond phages?" We ( @oschwengers.bsky.social @linsalrob.bsky.social @binomicalabs.org et al) finally did it with Baktfold github.com/gbouras13/ba... www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
Really enjoyed working with @emmabeansworth.bsky.social and @gemma-langridge.bsky.social on this one! Am loving the inevitable phage-ification of the Langridge lab group #phages
Massive thanks to Claire, @gemma-langridge.bsky.social' @ryancook94.bsky.social and @ukhsa.bsky.social's @mariechattaway.bsky.social, Beata Orzechowska and Frieda Jorgensen for getting this one over the line & in such quick time after there previous publication on this dataset!

Q: Can we predict clinical outcomes before the clinic?
A: Yes!
🦠 Microbiome predicts Pseudomonas colonisation & AMR early
🦠 Resistance mechanisms mirror those seen in lab!

A virus hiding inside bacteria may help explain colorectal cancer 🦠
"The broader implication is a shift in how we think about the gut microbiome and its relationship to disease. It may not be enough to ask which bacteria are present."

Scientists found an unexpected viral hitchhiker lurking inside a common gut bacterium – and it was twice as prevalent in people with colorectal cancer.
Really enjoyed writing a piece for @uk.theconversation.com - trying to write for a general audience, you suddenly realise how much jargon is deeply embedded in your brain #Phages #Microbiome #SciComm
