Flame Shoulder moth on the leaf of a fuchsia plant

Flame Shoulder moth on the leaf of a fuchsia plant

Moths come with some brilliant names, like the Least Black Arches or the Water Carpet, but when I discovered a Flame Shoulder in the trap I was expecting something a little more…flame-y 🤷‍♂️

Huge array of different moths in the trap this morning, here’s just a flavour. So many new for this year that our official recorder (my 10 year old) had to abbreviate “new species”.

Pick of the moth trap this morning were a Peppered moth and a Silver Y - a new species for me and, when I uploaded it, for iRecord it would appear.

A Emperor moth facing downwards, on an egg box

A Emperor moth facing downwards, on an egg box

A lovely Emperor moth in the trap this morning - a first time for 2026, as well as three other species new for this year. She laid eggs on the egg box and so it is now tucked into a hawthorn hedge to feed the youngsters.

Pick of the moth trap today was this hook tip - I’m thinking Watsonalla uncinula but I’m not certain.

Lots of Common Quakers and Hebrew Characters but one new moth for the year - a Muslin Moth. Just a small brown moth from a distance but very cool up close.

A casual glance this might be thought to be honey fungus, but a quick look underneath and it’s obvious it’s not, as it has pores not gills.

Three metre high Loquat tree surrounded by dead leaves, with an ivy-covered wall in the background

One of the trees that grows really well in Guernsey’s climate is the gloriously bonkers Loquat. Everything it does is upside down - leaves drop in the Spring, flowers in the Autumn, sets fruit over the winter and produces delicious fruit early summer, all the time looking great

A brown moth, called a variegated cutworm as well as a pearly underwing, on grey stone paving.

Take your pick - it’s a Variegated Cutworm Moth or it’s a Pearly Underwing. How can a moth have a slightly terrifying common name and a cute common name at the same time? Either way, it’s a first for this year in the trap last night.

Yorkshire Dales sheep and cattle swap boosts biodiversity - studies Natural England began switching to cattle grazing at its Ingleborough site in the Dales in 2004.

After replacing sheep with free-roaming cattle, 5x as many butterflies were recorded, and 2x as many species, due to the increased floral diversity.

Interesting stuff. But unless stocking densities are *extremely* low, cattle are an ecological disaster too.

Yes, on a little rock out in the Atlantic, that happily has quite a healthy biodiversity.
