Here's a more skittish species from my experience, a Zebra Longwing. Despite the flower this one is perched on, I've noticed they better prefer the large red flowers in the area.

Here's a notably small species of bee, a Pure Green Sweat Bee. While lacking the usual fuzzy exterior bees usually have, I think its vibrant green shell makes up for it in appearance.

Here's an active one I found at a ravine, a Rosy Wolfsnail. These seemed to pop up everywhere after I started looking for them, goes to show how little people notice things all around them.

I saw only one of these on the 1st of this month, a Halloween Pennant dragonfly. Fittingly seasonal, I was saving this image for today. Happy Halloween!

These little guys are everywhere here, they're Southern Flatcoil snails. They're all up-and-down the ditches after it rains, climbing up on the grass like this one.

Here's one of the largest beetles I've found so far, a Grapevine Beetle. We found this one under the mulch of our garden while we were uprooting weeds, it flew away shortly after we got pictures.

This one's a mouthful, a Six-Spotted Flower Longhorn Beetle. Originally I was just going over to take a picture of the Spot Flower it was on, it's so small I didn't notice it until I got close.

This one I've only ever seen once, a Zebra Longhorn Beetle. This one was resting on my lemon plant a few weeks after I got it established.

Here's a very subtle one, a Dark Flower Scarab. These spend their time hidden under the grass, I only found this one because I saw it before it went under the brush.

Here's a lovely beetle I found in a ravine, Euphoria Limbalis. I don't know much about them, but its bright green color makes it a personal favorite of mine.

Here's one to emphasize the swamp areas around here, a Duckweed Firetail. Their bright red contrast to the plants they land on makes them easy to see, as they often perch on floating aquatic plants.

Now for something different, like this Ebony Jewelwing damselfly. I found these in a ravine, at the bottom with the cool air and flowing water. I find its choice of habitat very agreeable.

These ones we only started seeing in our area recently, the Eastern Pondhawk. I usually find these ones low to the ground, darting around as they snatch up other insects.

Here's one of my best pictures, this one is of a Great Blue Skimmer, perched high in a clearing as if staking claim to the area, unbothered by even me being there.

Here's one that rarely perches for a picture, a Carolina Saddlebags dragonfly. This is one of the brown ones, but they can also be bright red, which I'll gladly share if I get a good picture of one.

An American Lady Butterfly (Vanessa virginiensis) revealing both sides of wings. Visiting Rudbeckia triloba. One of their host plants is plantain which grows in compact soil, and you it might be growing in your yard and/or urban surroundings! #VanessaVirginiensis
Mixing it up for Autumn, here's an Eastern Amberwing. They're a small species of dragonfly, this one was on one of our Beautyberry plants.
Dragonflies have been showing up more since the start of October, so I have a good few to share.

No bugs for this picture, but rather a big flower: A Scarlet Rosemallow. It's a kind of hibiscus flower, growing several feet tall and showing itself vibrantly with its red color.

Here's a very subtle one for today, a Carolina Satyr. These ones are rather easy to miss, as they stay close to the ground, amongst the dried leaves and such.

I almost forgot, this one is drinking from our Swamp Milkweed in the garden.

Here's a very large one for today, a Spicebush Swallowtail. While we only see 1-2 at a time in passing, the size of their wings announces them pretty well, allowing for a fun sight when they're around.

Coming back to the faster kinds of butterfly, here's a Whirlabout resting on a thistle leaf. This was on a nature reserve, one with little shade on the main trails.

Here's a more ornate discovery, a White Peacock butterfly. These made their way around the area, their bright wings making them stand out amongst every flower patch they were enjoying.

Here's another one, similar to yesterday's: a Pearl Crescent. These ones sport more round spots on their wings and usually only one shade of orange, a good way of telling the difference between these and the Phaons.
#Bugs #Butterflies #Nature #iNaturalist
Here's one we see pretty much everywhere here, a Phaon Crescent. They're a smaller kind, keeping low to the grass as they flutter around, and having 2-3 shades of orange with their patterns.

Here's one I saw only a couple days ago, a Ceraunus Blue. You can see on just the edge of its other wing the bright blue color that gave it its name, hidden by its closed wings while it rests, perched on the grass.

Here's a rare sight, a Monarch freshly-emerged from its chrysalis, drying its wings and getting ready to fly away.
This was taken when we were shopping for flowers at an outdoor garden, it's on the back of one of the signs.

Oh, I love moths, including this, with the peculiar name The figure of eight, Diloba caeruleocephala! But have you seen it and its' pattern on the wings, you understand why. It flies now.
