Here's another elegant NZ moth for you. This one's called the Alpine Treasure Owlet (*Ichneutica maya*).

It's mostly seen up in the mountains in the South Island but also in the mountains of the lower North Island. I saw this one up at Boyle Village in the North […]

Orange and brown moth with wavy rear margins resting on a brown leaf with sharp lobes.

Orange and brown moth with wavy rear margins resting on a brown leaf with sharp lobes.

Scalloped sallow (Eucirroedia pampina) on an oak. Almost all of the leaves on the tree were green so I'm wondering whether the moth chose this one for a good color match, then situated itself so that the wing shape blended with the sharp leaf margins. A lovely moth. 🌿 #noctuidae #moths #insects

Spodoptera litura, a species lives in Africa, Eurasia, Australia and Oceania.
It's a dark brown moth with complex patterns on its wings. The wingspan is approximately 4 centimeters.
The one in this photograph is a male.

The scales on his wings look partially gold reflecting light.
The base of his left forewing is damaged and so that the left hindwing is exposed. The hindwing is white with a silky sheen and has a line along its edge.

Japan, November 2024.

A close-up, high-resolution macrophotograph of a Noctuidae moth, likely from the genus Homorthodes, resting on a white woven surface. The image captures the intricate detail of the moth’s head and forebody. The moth's dense, furry scales range from golden tan to deep brown, creating a rich, mottled pattern. Fine black specks are interspersed throughout its plush body and forelegs, which are ringed with alternating dark and light bands. The moth's glossy, dark compound eyes peek out from behind the fuzzy facial hairs. Its wings are tightly folded over its back, showcasing a complex mosaic of browns, creams, and rust-colored streaks. The texture of the moth’s body and wings appears soft and velvety, with the lighting highlighting the intricate layering of scales. The surface beneath it, resembling a white grid or mesh fabric, contrasts with the moth’s warm, earthy hues, making the insect stand out prominently in the frame.

A #Noctuidae moth, likely Homorthodes sp. Look at those layered scales, color, pattern, texture, so much beauty in what most ignore flapping at a light. But slow down, look closer. You’ll be amazed at what’s out there.
