International study led by Japanese researchers analysed blood mercury in 11,215 seabirds (108 species), combining new and existing dataโthe first biologically based estimate of ocean mercury distribution.
Mercury levels vary with prey trophic level, body weight, and foraging depth. bit.ly/41O5pzL

The graphic displays a Puffin covering half the page and a Cormorant covering the other half. The title reads 'Survey Start Dates' with the dates '30th of April' for Puffins and '1st of May' for Cormorants, the start dates of the recommended colony count survey periods for these species in SMP.
Some important SMP dates are approaching!
Soon, the recommended colony count period for Puffins and Cormorants starts. Keep an eye out for more posts over the next couple of weeks looking at these species and their survey methods! #seabirds @btobirds.bsky.social @jncc.bsky.social @rspb.bsky.social
New research suggests gannet numbers on Bass Rock may be stabilising after a sharp avian flu-related decline. Emily Burton of the Scottish Seabird Centre notes breeding success remains low, so continued conservation is needed. bit.ly/47XFvgf
Publication seems a REALLY long way off, but do reach out if you'd like to schedule a book signing, talk, reading, podcast interview, exhibition, or any combination of the above to help get A New Unfeathered Bird off to a flying start next year.

An artistic photo of plastic from one Sable Shearwater chick laid out in a series of concentric circles on a black velvet background. Each circle has larger plastic with forks and tetra-pak lids in and full bottlecaps in the outermost layer.
Sable Shearwaters aren't an outlierโthey're a preview. Chick maximum plastic loads rose from ~200 pieces in 2011 to ~900 in 2025. And the plastics treaty has stalled.

The graphic displays six images of terns, five of which breed in Britain and Ireland, and one that's a bit out of place, with viewers prompted to identify who's who, especially the out-of-place individual. Results will come later in the week.
With spring comes the return of Britain and Ireland's breeding terns. Do you know their ID features well enough to know who's who of our five breeding terns below, and who's quite out of place?! Results later in the week.
