A visit to @rspb.bsky.social Bempton Cliffs may not have been the best idea with the windy conditions but we did see #Gannets. No puffins to be seen yet.

It’s been an age since i posted for #seabirdsunday i was up at Troup Head last week & its great to see the #gannets starting to come back on the cliffs with some courtship behaviour starting. Check out the colour change in the pupil of one of the pair (as a result of its exposure to bird flu)!

Lovely to see the Gannets coming back to the nesting grounds @rspb.bsky.social #BemptonCliffs at the weekend. This pair were greeting each other back to their nest with some "sky-pointing" & "fencing" (beak rubbing)

Gannet was so glad and so grateful to have met her soul mate.
She’d waited a long time for a perfect match and knew in every fibre of her being this was it.
She could tell because she was completely herself and knew she was overwhelmingly, beautifully and unconditionally loved.

This closeup-free image-not our photo-shows a pair of Northern Gannets from their necks up. The bottom edges of their necks are white, but beautiful colour soon appears as you follow the graceful curve up & over their heads: a soft peach, fading to white again just above their eyes, which have a turquoise rim around them. Their faces have fine black lines that almost look drawn-outlines that begin just behind their eyes & extend along their long, grey beaks. They’re extraordinarily beautiful birds to look at, but please do read the Wiki article to learn just what incredible feats they are capable of…and more.
Now, about today’s Music rec: “Wild Is The Wind” is the title song from a dramatic film made back in the 1950s (I think). I chose it because these Gannets are often seen covering wild, windswept rock-faces by the sea, clinging on as they nest there.
I recommended Johnny Mathis’ original version, as that’s the one I first heard & still love: he sings it so beautifully-with tenderness, passion & w/a perfect musical arrangement. However, if/when you go to find it on a streaming service, you’ll discover this song’s such a classic that many famous artists have covered it: David Bowie, Nina Simone:& George Michael, to name but a few.
If you prefer Bowie, I’d rec. the version of him singing it live at Glastonbury. We watched this on iPlayer-there’s a long intro before he appears onstage-wearing a gorgeous Alexander McQueen brocade jacket-& begins to sing. The crowd goes wild. Bowie’s take is very unique, his strong voice rises to extremes of high pitch then dives deeply low. It’s very Bowie, full of passion but reimagined, far from Mathis’ original. My sole complaint is that he leaves off the last line, fading out as the crowd erupts. We heard George Michael’s-his beautiful voice captures the song’s tenderness, poignancy & passion but leaves a long instrumental end. You may be a fan of Nina Simone or other great artists. Your choice. I❤️Johnny Mathis’ original🥰-tam💞

it is time to stop capturing and murdering wild birds, eaten by a few people, in an antiquated ritual, to enhance their notions cultural identity. #Gannets

it is time to stop murdering the wild Haggis, for similar reasons. #Haggis

Winter shot of the Bass Rock, North Berwick, East Lothian

I rather like the occasional winter shot of the #BassRock, #NorthBerwick #EastLothian - now that we’ve reached the longest day of the year it’s only 8-10 weeks until the #gannets are back

While I don't mind the winter too much, as it tends to offer up some interesting atmospheres to work with, I do enjoy all the opportunities that arise during #springtime

I have #gannets for my #birdoftheday but they’re terrible shots. 😭 They were lifers, though, and it was great to cross them off my list. 🪶

It is angled so that its white underside and wings with their black ends are facing the camera but its head is twisted giving a side on view of its orange neck, white crown, blue eye and dagger like beak full of long grass

Photo of a several gannets. The main subject is hovering over its mate which is on its nest at the top of a cliff. The hovering bird has a beak full of grass which its partner is reaching up for. The nesting site is crowded with 2 other birds on nests touching the one reaching up and other birds mostly off picture, making it difficult for the hovering bird to land

Bempton 2025 = unlimited #Gannets 💙

No shortage of nesting material to be had but delivery's a bit tricky when it's this crowded.

Two years ago we joined an Ocean Society tour to the Farallon Islands where Morris, a very special Northern Gannet happened to be that day.💚
Our tour's naturalist was Michael Pierson & there's a short film about him & Morris here...

According to Rob it's time for today's #BirdOfTheDay theme which is #Gannets, interpret it how you see it (bonus for actual Gannets).

Have a nice evening everyone 🙋‍♀️

Playing along with today's #BirdOfTheDay theme, which is #Gannets.

Until very recently I wouldn't have had anything to share, but I got a few pics on a recent pelagic birding adventure. Here's a Northern Gannet getting the hell out of Dodge.

A juvenile Cedar Waxwing perched in a pokeberry bush. It's in the process of swallowing a shiny black berry. Around it are a mix of green and black panicles of berries on purple-red stems and green leaves.

Today I also learned gannet is a slang term for glutton. (Thanks @robcrank68.bsky.social )

Gannets launching themselves from the cliffs of the Bass Rock to go fishing. Landing on return is a bit less elegant. More of a crash landing.

Note the bird in the centre of this trio. Gannets that have survived a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) infection have a permanent eye colour change, with their usually pale blue irises turning black or mottled. This change is a visible marker of recovery and suggests the birds are developing immunity to the virus. It is also proving to be a useful, non-invasive tool for scientists to monitor the effects of the disease on wild populations.

Gannet head shot.

Gannets mate for life returning each year to the same nesting spot. They have one chick, called a guga. So recovery will inevitably be slow but at least there is immunity to HPAI building within the population.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Gannets. These are Northern Gannets (Morus bassanus) on the Bass Rock off the East Coast of Scotland. Colony impacted by highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). Down by 25-30%. More information in ALT. #Birds 🪶 #Photography #Nikon @seabirdcentre.bsky.social

Gannets are large, white seabirds with yellowish heads and black-tipped wings. They are known for their distinctive, streamlined shape with a long neck, pointed beak, and long, pointed wings, and they have a wingspan of about 2 meters. You can often hear them before you see them, as they are noisy and their dives make a loud impact.
