The book THE GIRL WAKES: STORIES by Carmen Lau. Cover illustration is a sketched close-up of a girl’s head but her eyes are out of frame. Her mouth is the only thing colored in, and it’s smeared with pink across as if ambiguous whether it’s stained with blood or lipstick.The same pink is used in the swooping calligraphy of the title.

THE GIRL WAKES by Carmen Lau is beautifully written. Gorgeous prose, dark edges, haunting whimsy. Feels like reading dark fairy tales or Wonderland again but subtly woven into modern settings.
