Illuminated - Harrier Angels - BBC Sounds Robert Macfarlane on C16th carvings of angels based on the wings of hen and marsh harriers

118 angels soar aloft in the hammerbeam roof of a Fenland church—their carved feathers echoing the wings of the Marsh Harriers who once lived in this region in abundance.

I made a Radio 4 programme about the entanglements of ornithology & theology, raptors & raptures.

"Listen, everyone has a chance.
Is it spring, is it morning?
Are there trees near you,
and does your own soul need comforting?
Quick, then – open the door and fly on your heavy feet; the song
may already be drifting away."

from Mary Oliver's "Such Singing in the Wild Branches"

One minute of morning recording in the local park. Surprised to find the blackbird on the list. The starlings were belligerent, as I’ve been noticing lately.

The robin held his song through the whole of my time there, and I received it as one receives an unexpected kindness.

Seeing obliquely. Do I see the tree, or just its reflection? Does it matter that I’m not looking at the tree directly to know that it is spring?

Do beaver dams really make flooding worse? Research casts doubt on beavers as flood culprits Beaver dams play a key role in the ecosystem but are often considered dangerous, even though they have a limited impact on flooding downstream.

Beavers are never the bad guys. Don't demolish beaver dams!

This morning my little one said we should not do harm to trees because their hearts would hurt.

Later in the day we saw this on our walk. Maybe this is what he meant by trees having hearts?

A highly edited photograph of various stages of flowers on a Star Magnolia tree. The background is dark, there is a partially opened white flower and a partially open pink flower. Also an unopened bud in the midst of it

A new image of the Mont Saint Michel… Captured during a beautiful sunrise. Yes, you can photograph both sunset & sunrise at the Mont depending on which side of the bay you position 😉.

Wild Geese by Mary Oliver

I removed myself from work to join in to the momentous return of my favourite seasonal signal: geese honks. A symbol of shared endurance across distance and time. I find myself in awe each time I hear them pass above me.

Today they made me think of Mary Oliver's poem - an invitation back into life.

-15C outside but there’s a feeling of loosening in the air.

My backyard as the confluence of paths: the amplifying path of light, the fuzzy path of disappearing snow, the criss-cross path of living things, the yet unseen path of germination, the path of birdsong nurturing my hope…

A high-contrast, black and white photograph in a square format looking down onto a set of weathered stone steps leading into a body of water. The steps, textured and speckled with age, descend diagonally from the bottom left toward the middle right. A small cluster of thin, spindly wildflowers and grasses grows from a crack between two steps, their white blossoms standing out against the dark water. The water in the background is dark and rippled, creating a rhythmic pattern of light and shadow that fills the upper half of the frame. The composition is focused on the intersection of the rigid, heavy stone and the fluid movement of the water.

Dissolving in space,
My heart grows light like the bare branches,
And thoughts which through long months
Have lain like lead upon my breast,
Heavy, slow-ripening thoughts,
Grow light and sere,
And fall at last, so empty and so beautiful.

Edwin Muir.
