Yu’s journey demonstrates how gender and sexuality shape research, teaching, and activism alike. It reminds us of the importance of recognizing diverse contributions, supporting LGBTQ+ communities, and fostering inclusive spaces in higher education for all. #GenderEquality #QueerFeminism
"I intend to create LGBTQ+-inclusive and safe spaces for students." As a GTA, Yu brings her research into teaching, fostering inclusion, connectedness, and queer knowledge that reflects diverse experiences beyond Western frameworks. #InclusiveTeaching
Yu’s PhD explores queer academic activism: how Chinese academics use research expertise to empower LGBTQ+ communities, promote gender and sexual equality, and challenge Euro-American–centred scholarship. Her work highlights the intersection of research, identity, and advocacy. #QueerAcademia
She observed Chinese queer & feminist academics bridging academic and non-academic communities, continuing activism while supporting LGBTQ+ networks.
Their work showed Yu the power of combining scholarship and advocacy to create meaningful social impact. #InclusiveResearch
During her master’s at the University of Edinburgh, Yu conducted ethnographic fieldwork in Chinese lesbian communities. COVID-19 limited her research, revealing Euro-American centrism in global queer studies & highlighting the importance of locally grounded, inclusive scholarship. #QueerScholarship
Early in her journey in China, Yu faced heteronormative expectations and a homophobic syllabus in higher education.
"I once focused on women's representation in fiction… but realized I needed to shift toward radical studies on queer communities." This shaped her research focus and perspective.
