In #mathstoday #Alevelmaths did the binomial experiment- after initially getting competitive about who would throw the most 5s and one groups experiment being closer to the binomial distribution than the other group it led to some good discussions, I found it a great way to introduce the topic.

I really like this idea of using booklets for interventions. Does anyone have any they’d be willing to share? I am in need of something for a struggling year 1 to help them go into year 2 more secure on year 1 content (A level, not further) / something for them to do in extra lessons in year 2.

@mathsjem.bsky.social do you have this one for your website yet?

Just discovered these great #AlevelMaths question packs

These look good thanks. I have been on the look out for lessons I can use with my higher gcse resit group next year. These might be exactly what I need as it’s just a one year college programme but not the usual foundation tier resits as it’s for students who have a grade 4.

Good to see that the OCR Core Maths textbook is finally in stock but 6 weeks before the exam I doubt my students will bother to buy it. When i first asked hachette learning about stock for this (back in Sept) they originally said it would be available in December 🙈 #coremaths

Oh I see, thanks for explaining. I think my confusion was because I’ve only been teaching year 1 so been focused on 1 dimension so far. I still have a lot to learn!

Such a good idea. I was wondering is it usual for AQA to use r for displacement rather than s? I noticed it is listed as r on the formula that they need to know.

Thanks, that is helpful.

Very standard - differentiate from first principles … fully justify your answer.

@ecrmaths.bsky.social do you know?

Will they gain full marks if they begin the proof with f’(x) =lim h tends to zero f(x+h)-f(x) / h but never refer to the gradient of the chord or tangent? 2/2

#AlevelMaths I noticed in an AQA mark scheme for differentiation from first principles they give a mark for ‘completes the rigorous proof by explaining that as h tends to zero the gradient of the chord approaches the gradient of the tangent at that point’. Are they required to use this language? 1/2

Thanks

I always go with mathsgenie for resits as students find the website easy to navigate with videos and practice worksheets by topic and exam papers all in one place.

Marking #AlevelMaths year 1 mocks…is there a list somewhere of formula that students should know from gcse eg surface area / volume of a cylinder. The sort of thing that might come up in an optimisation question but won’t necessarily be given in the question.

Thanks, needed that!

This sounds great. I struggle with the fact that we are so small and have no extra capacity or resource to provide any extra sessions etc. I will definitely look to set summer work but it doesn’t feel like enough.

I am feeling this, our intake is very much at the lower end with it being our first year offering A levels. Thanks for sharing, I fear that I may be needing this for one of mine. Any tips for helping a struggling year 12 so that it doesn’t come to this in year 13?

Same,I am forever trying to get them to do more work and lessons always go slower than planned.Only have 4 students(first year offering A levels) so that helps but I find myself wishing I had more students as better examples of what working hard looks like. Ours are mostly 6 or non typical quals.

I do think our distinction between marked homework and “independent work” makes them think they don’t really need to bother with the independent part.

I probably do need to be more specific and then review atleast one question in class as you suggest.

Ours have a shorter weekly homework sheet which I mark and give feedback on and I’m finally getting them doing the Integral tests, but then we have “independent learning” which is largely from the textbook so they can self mark but they never do enough.

How do they submit evidence? This is something I had to introduce but it is literally just me asking them to show me once a week. We have no data/case studies since it’s our first year offering A levels.

These will be great for our gcse resitters

Do you have any tips for motivating students to do more work outside of lesson times? I started off with more trust but then rapidly found they weren’t doing enough.

This is great idea.

I can’t imagine finishing it either, not with the students we get. I was originally given a scheme of work that finished at Easter, but I think I’ll be teaching content right up to May half term. If I’m lucky I might get 1 or 2 weeks for revision.
