In #MathsToday I have been collating Mechanics questions from the last few years.

Students seem to struggle with pulleys.
Something to discuss at the #ALevelMaths Teacher Network.

In #MathsToday we introduced the coefficient of friction, both horizontally and on an inclined plane. Followed up by a really purposeful parents' evening for some of my Y2 #ALevelMaths students. Final push now, I love this time of year!

Used this lovely task from Underground Maths with year 12 today. I love that it has no calculating, it’s all reasoning. 🥰🙌 undergroundmathematics.org/calculus-mee... #MathsToday #ALevelMaths

What are they doing to your legacy @mathsnot.bsky.social? Currently the emporium is the only part of Edexcel that we can all agree is wonderful! #MathsToday #ALevelMaths

Is it SUVAT?
For each question, decide whether the question involves constant acceleration (use the SUVAT equations) or non-constant acceleration (use differentiation/integration)

Is it SUVAT? For each question, decide whether the question involves constant acceleration (use the SUVAT equations) or non-constant acceleration (use differentiation/integration)

In #MathsToday I find that my #ALevelMaths students often try to use the SUVAT equations for non-constant acceleration questions (when they should use calculus instead) so I have invented a twist on the classic game "Is it cake?"... which I'm calling "Is it SUVAT?" 😅🍰

Such a good idea. We have rewritten the pure SOW and possibly will look at Statistics next. #alevelmaths

Lots of Dr Frost slides have been updated. These are much better and flow better through a topic. Loved teaching mechanics with the new slides. Didn’t hardly use the textbook. #alevelmaths

An A Level mechanics question on inclined planes, with the answers in two different coloured pens. The students had 60 seconds each before passing the paper to their partner to continue. I think with a regular group I may have given them 90 seconds, but these were further maths students so 60 was enough.

In #MathsToday I tried @theteacherwins.bsky.social's idea of getting the students to take turns answering an #ALevelMaths question, to focus on clearly setting out their steps, so that the other person could pick up from where they got up to. It went really well, and they seemed to enjoy it!

#AlevelMaths I noticed in an AQA mark scheme for differentiation from first principles they give a mark for ‘completes the rigorous proof by explaining that as h tends to zero the gradient of the chord approaches the gradient of the tangent at that point’. Are they required to use this language? 1/2

As my colleague has nicked my copy of Teaching A Level Maths @susanwhitehouse.bsky.social @mrsouthernmaths.bsky.social, I need ideas for introducing hypothesis testing (edexcel stats y1) pls. My class are v mixed and I think will need lots of support with this. Any ideas pls? #ALevelMaths

Marking #AlevelMaths year 1 mocks…is there a list somewhere of formula that students should know from gcse eg surface area / volume of a cylinder. The sort of thing that might come up in an optimisation question but won’t necessarily be given in the question.

Some differentiation revision with Year 13 in #Mathstoday included me saying the word "sneaky product rule" about 100 times

Made this for year 12 to practice discernment with differentiation. Took far longer to plan and write than it did for them to do it, but hopefully it helps consolidate and make meaning between sentences and expressions/equations! #MathsToday #ALevelMaths

In #MathsToday we started to look at inclined planes in #ALevelMaths.

I also showed my students a video interview that I filmed with one of our A* students from last year, talking about what motivated him, how he approached his studies and dealt with setbacks.

This time last year, I had a handful of year 13 #ALevelMaths students who were in the danger zone of getting a U (maybe getting E on a good day) So I started giving them daily videos to watch by @tlmaths.bsky.social to break their revision down into manageable chunks. There was a tick sheet...
