I showed up for a staff meeting today and ended up holding a baby goat in a tiny sweater the whole time. I love working at a farm sanctuary. 🥹

A worldmap of the spatial distribution of extracted flood events in the Groundsource dataset. The map displays the total number of flood events extracted by the LLM-based pipeline aggregated per grid cell. The data are visualized using a Robinson projection, with event counts represented by a logarithmic color scale. Red points indicate the spatial centroids of reference flood events from the GDACS database.

Excited to announce Groundsource - an open-source dataset of historic flood events! This has easily been one of the coolest projects I've worked on recently!

Evaluating E-OBS forcing data for large-sample hydrology using model performance diagnostics Abstract. For large-sample hydrological studies over large spatial domains, large-scale meteorological forcing data are often desired. For Europe, the EStreams dataset and catalogue satisfies this dem...

Are you working with E-OBS data and wondering how they good is the data when compared to purely national datasets, such as the provided in CAMELS? Then check it out this new piece of work recently published in HESS.

The work was a collaboration with Franziska Clerc-Schwarzenbach!

Where Do We Go From Here? - Dissent Magazine If there’s a chance to make a better world, our best shot comes from building a working-class majority.

“The odds are against us, but that’s nothing new. What’s distinctive about our moment is the still fresh memory that we could move from the margins to the center, that our socialism really could be democratic, not just in theory but in practice and at scale.” dissentmagazine.org/article/wher...

More than 9,000 children in Gaza hospitalised for acute malnutrition in October, UN says Aid agencies say Israel is still restricting their aid shipments despite ceasefire announced two months ago Malnutrition continues to take a toll among Gaza’s young despite a ceasefire declared two months ago, with more than 9,000 children hospitalised for acute malnutrition in October alone, according to the latest UN figures. While the immediate threat of famine has receded for most of the 2.2 million Palestinians in Gaza after the ceasefire announcement on 10 October, the UN and other aid agencies report continuing Israeli restrictions on their humanitarian aid shipments, which they say fall well below the needs of a population weakened and traumatised by two years of war, homelessness and living in flimsy shelters. TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

Israel still committing genocide in Gaza, Amnesty International says The NGO’s chief says last month’s ceasefire ‘risks creating a dangerous illusion that life in Gaza is returning to normal’ Amnesty International has said Israel is “still committing genocide” against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, despite the ceasefire agreed last month.
