Emphasis on the end: early reading development is actually ORAL LANGUAGE development. Early elementary ELL teachers have already seen the way this plays out for ELs.

Listening to students doing the speaking portion of the ELPA21 and thinking…well, whoever ends up scoring this one is in for a treat. 😂 #elpa21 #elsky
I don’t have one! Partly because they all kind of blur together. I’ve given 5 stars to only two though: Love, Theoretically and Check & Mate! You?
I loved the first book! Books 2 and 3 weren’t my favorite. Just started season 3 of the show. My husband (who didn’t read the books) loves the show!
B!
Student: “I want to be a scientist but the words are like… so high as Mount Everest in my brain.”
The challenges of being an EL! 😂
Don’t worry, little guy! We’re learning tier 2 vocab! 👏

Me: "I don't know exactly how long ago...it happened in ancient times."
Student: "Ancient times? Like the eighties?"

Just now seeing that DHS will make arrests in and around schools/churches. This has horrible implications.
Many relevant presidential actions today:
1.Suspension of the refugee program
2.Suspending the entry of “aliens” across the southern border
3.Birthright citizenship no longer guaranteed
4. End all federally funded diversity, equity, & inclusion programs

The amount of ed tech people consistently promoting AI tools is staggering. We need to be careful about how we roll out some of these items with students.
I’m guessing they’re keeping them open with the hopes that we will be back on soon. Unfortunately that does leave US accounts susceptible to hacking and it’s creepy in the meantime..
🧵A while ago, I posted about how I teach vocabulary. I collect all tier 2 vocab from the unit I'll be teaching + within my discrete grammar lesson each wk we do 20 ish mins of vocab work. In this thread, I'll go through what that looks like + then at the end link to the resource

The first thing I would like to mention is that there must be a recognition on the part of everybody in this nation that America is still a racist country,” King said, addressing an audience in Michigan days before his murder. “Now however unpleasant that sounds, it is the truth. And we will never solve the problem of racism until there is a recognition of the fact that racism still stands at the center of so much of our nation and we must see racism for what it is.” Had he lived another week, he would have presented a Sunday sermon called “Why America May Go to Hell.”
This year, let’s remember King as the radical he was wapo.st/3PYexff
One of my new ELs is learning so much in a completely new environment to him. I taught him how to use the tape dispenser. While I was with another student, he used up the rest of my tape to put his airplane up on the sound wall…🤭

Me, turning a paper over under my doc cam: “Flip to the back!”
Student: “Umm…teacher? Flip to the back?”
He proceeded to stand up and pretend to do a BACK FLIP…🤭

Thanks, BestBuy, for writing my verb tense quiz for this week.
Just because you speak English does not mean you have the skill set of an #EAL teacher. That being said some of the most extraordinary EAL teachers I have known, have had different languages as their first, and added English to their repertoire.
I love story cubes! Especially for sub plans. 😆

Q1: I don't have students this year so I'm going to reference 2016. when I was teaching 9th and 10th ESOL and coaching Wrestling. I remember the day after the election, my 9th grade students were quiet-like oddly quiet. A student wrote on her hand in sharpie "Not My President" and then
I just came across them recently! I was very taken aback!
