Thin green sign on metal pole with rough grass around, a loch then mountains behind. The sign pointing to the left indicates a shoreline path in English and Gaelic.
Signage alongside the loch in Torridon - place in Scotland, not road and school in Lewisham.

This week’s #FingerpostFriday comes from one of our signs in Glen Affric, which was recently repaired by volunteers Margaret and Nick.
The sign also sits along #ScottishHillTrack route 265, Tomich to Glen Affric.

Our signs are more correctly known as direction signs as they direct you where to go, and it would be 1920 before any real guidance came out as to how they should be designed.

It's ScotWays’ 181st Birthday!
There’s much more regulation surrounding signposting today than there was when ScotWays first started installing signs back in 1885. At that time, the most recent signposting guidance was dated 1835!
Over the last two months, our Information Officer Craig Reilly has been busy scanning our large and varied map collection as part of a preservation project. Over 900 maps have been scanned using a high-resolution A0 flatbed scanner, from small 1:50,000 sheets to large one-inch to one-mile OS maps.
We're recruiting for an Administration & Communications Assistant! Find out more: scotways.com/jobs/
It's #FingerpostFriday!
Thanks to volunteer Robert for replacing our sign at Old Struan near Blair Atholl and repainting its pole.

Black and white photo of 5 men stood outside while on a walk in the countyside, wearing jackets and hats, with trees and a fence behind them. 3 of the men are posing for the photo while 2 in the middle are looking at a map. There is a border collie in the background walking to the left.
Black and white photo of 4 men outside on a walk in the countryside, wearing jackets and hats, with trees behind them and a fence beside them on their right. 1 man walks ahead with a walking pole whereas 3 men walk behind from a small distance while having a conversation.
Good weather, like the sun we had at the weekend, is perfect for getting out for a walk! A view which was also held by our past Directors, as seen in this photo from 1984 of a noticeably less sunny walk at Hannahfield.

Support a sign repair 🔧
Our signpost at a junction of rights of way south-west of Falkirk is corroding, and the vinyl letters on the three signs are starting to peel off. Donating towards the repair of a signpost will ensure it can continue to do its job, pointing out a path, for years to come.
Do you know a location or business that would be suitable for distributing our leaflets to the public? Suitable locations can include visitor centres, cafes, outdoor centres, and more.
The leaflets can be ordered completely free here:

In 2025, with immense support from volunteers, we distributed 25,000 of our access rights leaflets to over 350 locations, helping more people learn how to access Scotland’s outdoors responsibly.
With further funding from @Nature Scot, we are continuing to distribute our leaflets across Scotland.
As you may have seen, the Culra Bothy, along #ScottishHillTrack route 155, has now been demolished. There is currently no shelter at all in the vicinity. Work will begin this year on a replacement structure. The Mountain Bothies Association (MBA) is welcoming any donation to support this.
We have recently begun a project to overhaul our Heritage Paths resource and will be re-surveying and updating route descriptions in due course.
This week’s #FingerpostFriday comes from East Lothian and points along the Herring Road.

The majority of our 4000 signs across Scotland are about 2 metres high. But in some places, low-level signs do the job just as well, like this one near Derry Lodge in the Cairngorms.

Staff from scotways and ramblers with a table at Scottish Labour conference
As part of our engagement with all parties in the run up to the election in May, we are here with @scotways.com at #ScotLab26. If you are here, come and tell us your favourite walk and talk to us about why Scotland needs a Scottish Path Fund.

#FingerpostFriday for #SeachdainNaGàidhlig from An t-Eilean Sgitheanach (Isle of Skye).
We normally install bilingual signs in the north and west Highlands and Argyll, areas where local authorities also usually install bilingual signs.
#ScottishHillTrack route 154 is another very long and rewarding route from Loch Rannoch through the wild heart of Ben Alder Forest to the eastern end of Loch Laggan.
Start: NN 506 576
Finish NN 554 898

The Stock Mounth was also known as 'The Foggy Road' among locals in Durris, fog being the Scots word for moss.
