“Gibbs frequently returns to the idea that what we know as Black American music evolved through a complex series of adaptations to a hostile environment and an unfamiliar musical framework.”
Jazz OTD: I believe that "The Great Jazz Trio" (Hank Jones, Ron Carter, Tony Williams) had been assembled originally for a Sadao Watanabe album on Japan's "East Wind Records" in 1976, recording another eight for the label, including this lovely one with Jackie McLean on April 6-7, 1978. #Jazzsky
a cool thing about "cd's" is you push one button and it plays an entire album of music ad free and then (unless you request otherwise) it just stops and awaits further instruction. a very elegant system.
When I was a kid I saw Ramsey Lewis and Chuck Mangione play in Bushnell Park for free... same place I later saw Billy Harper, David Murray, Amina Claudine Myers... Hartford has a lot to offer people who love jazz

Was just listening to Pentangle — Cruel Sister and Reflection — yesterday. The Cherry Red box set of their albums (with a ton of bonus tracks) is amazing.

This new collab from Nick Millevoi and Zach Goldstein is both tightly wound and free-flowing, interlocking pieces coming together and breaking apart, almost simultaneously.
Look at the density of visual gags & performer “business” in this MUPPET SHOW number, and all of it elevating the central musical performance. It also is comprised entirely of one-off characters for just this bit. But it radiates effortless fun in a way few modern Muppet bits do.
