More than one thousand undergraduate students from diverse institutions across the United States and Puerto Rico worked with faculty members from the Genomics Education Partnership to generate hundreds of high quality gene annotations as part of an effort to understand massive size expansion of the Drosophila dot chromosome.

Stanek et al. studied the Drosophila "dot chromosome” to investigate chromosome-specific size expansion, focusing on four species whose dot chromosomes are 2- to 15-fold larger compared to D. melanogaster.
