You can’t say criminals don’t deserve due process when due process is the thing that decides if they're criminals. Otherwise you're just kidnapping people you don't like.

Sex Redefined: The Idea of 2 Sexes Is Overly Simplistic Biologists now think there is a larger spectrum than just binary female and male

My husband has taught human reproduction and development to the Cambridge medics for over three decades. When people start banging on about "only two biological sexes" he starts with "which sex: genetic, hormonal, or gonadal"?

Biological sex is not binary. www.scientificamerican.com/article/sex-...

Some inspiration for writing in the midst of fascism:

“Create dangerously, for people who read dangerously… Writing, knowing in part that no matter how trivial your words may seem, someday, somewhere, someone may risk his or her life to read them.”

Can we stop calling these atrocities "deportations." These people sold to El Salvadorian prisons were not deported. Deportation is a process that did not take place. They were rounded up and removed with no process. They were kidnapped, not deported.

Publishers Ask Congress to Defend Libraries as Federal Library Grant Funding Ends Four of the Big Five publishers and Sourcebooks sent a letter to Congress on April 3 expressing “deep concern” for the nation’s libraries following a week of unprecedented turmoil at the Institute of ...

Harper Collins didn't sign on to protect libraries. The other big four publishers (including my publisher, Penguin Random House) did. They are also part of the Murdoch empire.

Imagine being a publishing house and NOT supporting library funding.

One of my scholarly book coaching clients just told me, "You are much smaller than me, but I am terrified of you!"

I laughed so hard.

(FYI, she's about to get a contract from her dream press, so at least this fear pays off.)

Now that I’m no longer a professor, I realize I miss that one student in every class who would always nod their head during my lectures. Like, “I’m really getting this!” That felt like a rare moment of true connection.

Great points. It doesn’t pay off to preach to the choir or to focus on anti-science folks, but I think there’s a third group of “ambivalent but could be swayed” folks who deserve attention. Actual strategies to reach them I’m not sure about yet!

If there's ever been a time to fix this perception problem, it's now.

What are your thoughts?

More than ever, researchers need to start engaging with the public and translating the broader implications of their findings in accessible language.

Tell people what you do on a daily basis! Talk about why it matters to the world and why cutting off funds harms EVERYONE.

This misperception of academics as out of touch has paved the way for this new presidential administration to obliterate knowledge production.

Because the folks in power are *scared* of knowledge. They want a society where people can't think critically, and therefore, won't question the system.

And in these publications, scholars overwhelmingly utilize jargon and specialized language that completely excludes non-experts.

The Ivory Tower effect remains alive and well, even though the majority of universities (and their students) are not elite.

Knowledge is kept behind paywalls (for which companies like Elsevier make billions in profits academics never see).

In addition, academics are not rewarded by their institutions for engaging with the general public. It's often framed as a distraction from publications.

Research in the United States is being decimated and most people don’t care.

Research has an image problem. Academics have an image problem. Higher education has an image problem.

Your average American does not know that scientists and scholars do work that actually benefits THEM on a daily basis.
