Another way to read these numbers is that the ERC is massively under-funded. The EU could double the ERC budget three times, and even if the average return on grants halved each time you expanded, you'd still be making a profit.

very few things make me as happy as data replication by different hands.

Today, two reviewers on a grant panel told me that my publication record (10 corresponding authors in 11 years) and my number of citations (13,500, h index 36) as a PI were lower than expected. This funding organization specifically asked reviewers not to consider metrics, but only quality. 😬

1. building on each other’s ideas using a "yes, and…" approach,
2. constantly being open to reframing our questions, and
3. reminding ourselves that many new principles must still be discovered!
