I wrote a whole paragraph to a copy editor to convince her that my text absolutely could not say "Bayes's theorem".

Why we won’t be funding open access publishing any more - Cancer Research UK - Cancer News The open access movement was bold and promising, but ultimately disappointing. Now is the time to stop and call for a new way to make publishing work…

I no longer find Mastodon useful, but I don't mind there being specialized instances that restrict postings of things that others find innocuous or beneficial. I remember looking for instances to join, finding one that seemed appealing but wouldn't allow insect photos, so I joined other instances.

Yeah, "swimming" seems misleading. E. coli are big, and they have to keep reorienting because Brownian motion knocks them off course--even though the flagella are supposed to push them in the right direction when they're not tumbling.

Book cover with a green gradient background for "The Organism–Environment Pairing: A Historical and Philosophical Reappraisal" by Alejandro Fábregas-Tejeda (MIT Press, 2026). The book series label “The Vienna Series in Theoretical Biology” appears at the top. The title is set in large, bold lettering using three colors: white (“The” and “Pairing”), warm yellow (“Organism–”), and bright green (“Environment”). The subtitle appears below in smaller white text, and the author’s name is printed at the bottom. In the lower right, a monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) rests on clusters of pink milkweed flowers. Behind it, a large pale-green butterfly silhouette fills the background; its outline follows the shape of a red lacewing butterfly (Cethosia biblis). The layered butterflies visually echo the book’s central idea of an organism–environment pairing.

Are these interviews only available via Youtube? It would be convenient to add them to the queue in a podcast app. (There's an old Marginalia Review of Books podcast, but it seems that it only ran for about a year.)

AGAINST AI -

against-a-i.com "Materials here are intended as solidarity solace for educators who might find themselves inventing wheels alone while their administrators, trustees, and bosses unrelentingly hype AI and nakedly enthuse the negative consequences for educator labor."

I can't judge the accuracy, but I'm grateful to @nikomccarty.bsky.social for writing a history. Among other things, it summarizes arguments for and against eLife's publishing models, which should be of interest to #philsci people given the interdependency of scientific practice.

I'm co-organising this workshop on the idea of rewilding digital infrastructure in Edinburgh on the 28/29th May - and am somewhat overawed by all the incredible people who've agreed to speak.

And you could be one of them... If you submit an abstract by the (new deadline) of the 31 March.

A Big Night Light in the Sky? Start-Up Wants to Launch a Space Mirror.

"The company is seeking F.C.C. approval to test an idea to reflect sunlight to Earth at night, possibly powering solar panels." "The agency’s stance is that activities in space — which, by definition, are not on Earth — are not subject to environmental review."

This seems required by other aspects of Lewontin's view, since he thinks that a population and its environment can change each other over time, creating new relationships, or ... new niches.
