Little win: pre-viva went great 🥳 Questions & chat were also so good! I left motivated (and relieved 😅). Next up: PhD viva 🎓 Thanks to everyone who joined! Huge thanks to @stevensonlab.bsky.social @profkathrynelmer.bsky.social @physiologyuog.bsky.social @sbohvm.gla.ac.uk 💖🐹 #PhDLife #Academia
The lower scene shows Port Lligat, his home on the Catalan coast. He claimed the image reflects “nuclear mysticism,” his attempt to unite religion and modern science after WWII. The work now sits in Kelvingrove Art Gallery in #Glasgow. In 1961, vandals damaged it; the museum restored it.
Finally had a chance to see this masterpiece by #SalvadorDali, Christ of Saint John of the Cross (1951). He got the inspiration for the crucifixion from above without nails and designed the perspective using a physics-driven approach. He used a stuntman in a harness to study the suspended body.
Thinking of adding covid as a co-author on my thesis since it’s caught me for the 4th time and has clearly been the most consistent companion in this journey
Escaping to a holiday destination, yet the thesis has passed through airport security undetected 🛫 #PhDLife
PAW and OHRBID Potluck Picnic yesterday at the Garscube campus! Lovely to have both groups together! Never manage to get a picture of the food before we attack it 😂 Luckily the rain mostly held off to we didn't have to dash back inside with all the food!

Excited to share Sayantan's latest publication! The group found prolactin enhanced N-cadherin expression in the convoluted tubules and increased kidney volume. The findings show water stability is regulated by prolactin.

Edinburgh Pride, Scotland 📍
to be accepted for who you are, to #love freely, to stand in a space where no one judges your beliefs or who you love - that means everything. I’m learning to love myself and to love others better. #loveislove❣️
Happy Pride everyone. Be proud of who you are. 🌈 🫶🏻
Every sunset felt like magic, every reflection like a painting in Kilchoan. The silence, the skies, the sea—completely unforgettable. I’m still in awe. #Scotland #Nature
Irem providing an excellent (albeit very short) overview of her nearly complete thesis using a multi-omics approach to understand photoperiodic polyphenisms.

Amazing talk by @iremdenizlimsc.bsky.social on her doctoral work on Siberian Hamsters at @stevensonlab.bsky.social in the @sbohvm.gla.ac.uk Research Away day! 🐹
there was a 6.2 earthquake right off the coast of my neighbourhood in Istanbul today. I’m thousands of kilometers away from my loved ones, couldn’t reach them for hours and still shaking with anxiety and dread. guilt of being far & safe is brutal. this is one of the hardest parts of living abroad.
Quick escape to @sceneuog.bsky.social Loch Lomond — a perfect mix of loch views, science, fresh air, and a wee hike.
Nature always delivers.

Scotland has my heart ♥️
Carved thistles on old trees, cherry blossoms against a cold blue sky, foxes darting through parks, and cormorants resting by the river—Glasgow is full of quiet magic if you look closely ✨
New Naturally Speaking Blog!

Great talk by Dr. Jyoti Tiwari on how photic cues drive migration, sleep, and immunity in redheaded buntings. Her findings reveal how ALAN and noise pollution disrupt these processes, underscoring the need to preserve natural light-dark cycles. #PAWSeminar
doing a PhD: 30% research, 70% fighting invisible brain demons.
ironic how much I love my project, yet getting out of bed feels harder than climbing everest.
anyway, brains are weird. be kind — to yours and to others’.

Excited to share the latest publication from the group, which outlined how the bird brain detects light and the links to seasonal control of reproduction.

it’ll probably be so cliché but Slains Castle is THE pub for me in aberdeen 🧛🏻♀️ i even thought of travelling from glasgow to aberdeen just for their cocktails!
PAPER ALERT!🚨
Short photoperiod triggers DNA #methylation in key reproductive gene promoters, driving testicular regression in Siberian hamsters. Using @nanoporetech.com, our study reveals #epigenetic shifts linked to #seasonal #reproduction.

it was such a pleasure meeting you! haha hope you enjoyed!
We celebrated Darwin’s birthday with a great Darwin Day Lecture at @sbohvm.gla.ac.uk, @uofglasgow.bsky.social ! Professor @stevebrusatte.bsky.social’s talk on the rise and fall of dinosaurs was both inspiring and insightful. Thanks for a fascinating discussion! #DarwinDay #Paleontology #Evolution
Excited to present my PhD research on photoperiod-driven polyphenism in Siberian hamsters at #SICB2025! Stop by poster P4-157 during the session tomorrow to discuss how seasonal changes shape developmental plasticity. Looking forward to connecting! 🐹
Dr. Sayantan Sur presented his work on molecular regulation of seasonal adiposity in Japanese quails at #SICB2025 !
Great talk by Calum at #SICB2025 on role of hypothalamic Dio3 in seasonal responses in Siberian hamsters!
As @physiologyuog.bsky.social we had our “traditional” Christmas potluck party today! Thanks for everyone joining and all the secret Santas bringing gifts and joy! 🎄
A little #PhD summary: Photos from my Friday PGR talks across the years, all about seasonal rhythms in Siberian hamsters! 🐹❄️ It’s been quite a journey studying how these fascinating creatures adapt to changing seasons. Now getting closer to the finish line! 🥹
