I could have reached out and picked them up. I had a work AGM in Chepstow, rude not to visit them the famous hawfinch at Parkend, Gloucestershire while down there.

Here are a few barn owl shots from a recent outing with with Martin Loftus. We were treated to some of the best encounters I’ve had of barn owl, two birds hunting at close quarters. Just suburb.

The white kite from Gigrin Farm, Powys, Mid Wales. This adult leucistic red kite has been here for a number of years, but is not a regular visitor to the feeding station. www.austinmorley.blogspot.co.uk

At last, the Least. This was my second visit to WET Steart Marshes and it paid off. The Least sandpiper showed particularly well this morning as it foraged along the muddy edges of the scrapes infront of the Quantock hide. #UKBirding

Revisiting the spotted nutcracker from Wageningen near Amsterdam on this day in 2019. It was happily stealing from my bag of hazelnuts and taking some from my hand - brilliant birding experience.

Last weekend Autumn and I did the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch. She was keen enough to unofficially do it again before school on Monday. We might have a birder on our hands 🤞

Spent the morning dodging the dog 💩 at Marbury where the hawfinch showed particularly well after coming down from high up in an elm to feed on a yew.

Late to the party, but thrilled to have finally connected with the booted eagle at Marazion in Cornwall. The bird didn’t play ball for the onlookers in the lay-by, but put on an impressive, if very short, overhead flight from the A394 railway bridge 🦅

Not the day I was hoping for up along the north east but the yank pipit was a nice bonus. Been about 10 years since I saw my last one. Quality company too, on the long journey there and back.

Quality views of the American buff bellied pipit today at Ross Back Sands early this morning, the bird was pretty confiding and faithful to an area of half frozen salt marsh south of Guile Point. Well worth the long, long walk out to view it.

2024 highlights include Autumn starting school, leaving a great job & great team of ecologists to start a promotion in the new year & adding 7 lifers putting me on 453 BOU. One of my lowest annual totals, with some painful dips. The nature of the game.

Happy birders (despite Baker’s disapproving selfie face) after watching the American yellow warbler foraging in the trees and shrubs right next to us at New Hythe, Kent. Unforgettable.

Sensational day in Kent yesterday, with prolonged point blank views of the American yellow warbler at New Hythe and the scops owl at Broadstairs. No better way to end the birding year.

I spent this cold and windy morning at Southport tracking down snow bunting. This was a typically showy bird that wasn’t perturbed by the dog walkers or and passersby.

Today was my last day at WSP where I’ve had the privilege of working with a passionate, friendly team of ecologists. I’ve worked abroad & have been involved with some really interesting projects. But, I’m excited for my next career chapter where new projects and a step up to principal role awaits.
