Here's one of my favorite pictures I've taken this year. Marasmius capillaris emerging from the stalk of an oak leaf.

Correct, but the terms go the other way around. The genus is the first part of the name, species second. I think it feels kinda backwards because the genus is similar to our family/last names and the species is more specific like a first name
Hmm I meant to respond earlier but I had poor signal so I guess it didn't go through.. I believe candlesnuff refers to Xylaria hypoxylon which looks more or less identical and is in the same genus, but grows on wood instead of sweetgum pods.
An immature Xylaria liquidambar, a strange mushroom only found on the fruit of sweetgum trees

Ophiocordyceps sinensis, the #caterpillar #fungus, has a fascinating dual lifestyle. It is both an #endophytic and #entomopathogenic fungus.
The fungus produces spores that settle on vegetation, and when ghost moth larvae feed on contaminated plant material, the fungus becomes parasitic.

"I'm just asking questions" ok that's great but the next step is to actually look for answers instead of just believing whatever sounds good in your head (not directed toward you). I'm so tired of the "just asking questions" brigade
But seriously if anyone has any guesses what it is please let me know. Found in Ohio, Feb 5 on decayed, mossy wood. Galerina is my only guess but idk
Just a little guy
We should have politicians attempt to design a railway system so we can definitively prove what we all already know: that unconscious, single-celled protists are more effective problem solvers than our politicians.
